guard32.dll is a 32-bit protection component installed by Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Firewall. If Windows says guard32.dll is missing, cannot be loaded, or caused another program to crash, repair the Comodo installation rather than downloading a loose DLL.

First, identify which problem you have
There are two different situations involving this file:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Missing-file error: Comodo will not update, start, repair, or load because the file is absent or damaged.
- Application crash: Chrome, a browser, debugger, game, or another program identifies
guard32.dllas the faulting module.
The first situation usually means an incomplete Comodo installation, failed update, quarantine event, or damaged file. The second is more often a compatibility conflict caused by Comodo loading its protection module into another process.
Follow the fixes below in order.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Comodo
This is the safest and most likely solution when Comodo is still installed.

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
If Comodo is installed
- Close the affected application.
- Open Start, search for Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Firewall, and launch it.
- Open the product’s Settings, More, Help, or About area.
- Look for Check for updates, Update, Repair, or a similar maintenance option.
- Run the update or repair as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Restart Windows after the process finishes.
- Test Comodo and the application that reported
guard32.dll.
Comodo’s exact menu names vary between product versions. If the installed program has no repair option, download the current installer from Comodo’s official Internet Security or product download page. Do not use a third-party installer archive.
Run the installer, choose the repair or upgrade option if offered, and allow it to replace the existing installation. If repair is unavailable:
- Open Settings with Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Find Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Firewall.
- Select the three-dot menu or the product entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the current official Comodo installer as administrator.
- Restart again and test the original application.
Reinstalling the complete security product restores the matching protection components. It is safer than copying guard32.dll from another computer because the file must match Comodo’s other modules, configuration, and architecture.

Do not immediately delete guard32.dll or remove random registry values. A removed Comodo installation can leave behind startup, injection, or protection entries that still refer to the file.
Use Comodo’s own uninstaller or official cleanup procedure if it is available. Afterward:
- Restart Windows.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Check Startup apps for an obsolete Comodo entry.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps and confirm that no Comodo component remains.
- Check Event Viewer only after the official removal process, using Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System for current errors.
If Windows still reports guard32.dll after Comodo has been removed, the remaining reference needs to be traced as a stale startup or application-injection entry. Contact Comodo support with the exact error and file path instead of deleting system files at random.
Fix 2: Check quarantine and file authenticity
Security software can quarantine a legitimate Comodo component after an update or detection change. Restore it only when the file belongs to the expected Comodo installation.

- Open Comodo and find Quarantine, History, Logs, or Detected items.
- Search for
guard32.dll. - Check the detection details, original path, and date.
- Restore the file only if it is identified as a Comodo component and the path matches the installed product.
- Update Comodo immediately after restoration.
- Restart Windows.
Before trusting a restored file, right-click it in File Explorer and select Properties. Check:
- The Location or full path.
- The Digital Signatures tab, if present.
- The signer and whether Windows reports that the signature is valid.
- The file’s relationship to the installed Comodo product.
On 64-bit Windows, public Comodo material associates the 32-bit file with:
C:WindowsSysWOW64guard32.dll
The corresponding 64-bit protection component is commonly:
C:WindowsSystem32guard64.dll
These names are easy to misunderstand. SysWOW64 stores 32-bit system components on 64-bit Windows, while System32 commonly contains 64-bit components. Do not replace guard32.dll with guard64.dll, and do not copy either file between folders.

Fix 3: Resolve a Comodo compatibility crash
If an application crashes and lists guard32.dll as the faulting module, reinstalling a missing file is not the right approach. Comodo’s HIPS or Defense+ protection can load an injection component into another process, and an update to that application can expose an incompatibility.
This has historically affected Chrome, including reports involving an older Chrome release and an older Comodo build. That history does not prove a universal current problem, but it makes a Comodo compatibility check the correct first step.

Try this sequence:
- Update Comodo through its official updater or current installer.
- Update the affected application through its own official updater.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
- If the crash continues, temporarily disable only the relevant Comodo protection feature for testing, if Comodo provides that control.
- Re-enable protection after the test.
Some Comodo versions expose an exclusion for shellcode injection or a trusted-application rule. Menu names differ, and exclusions reduce protection. Use them only as a temporary diagnostic step or when Comodo support gives instructions for your installed version.
If the application works only after Comodo is disabled, the evidence points to a compatibility conflict. The durable fix is a compatible Comodo update, an application update, or removing Comodo if it is no longer maintained for your setup. Do not permanently rename or delete guard32.dll to suppress the crash, because that can disable part of Comodo’s protection and leave the installation inconsistent.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components when other files are failing
SFC and DISM repair Windows components. They do not normally reinstall a third-party Comodo DLL, so use them as secondary troubleshooting steps, especially if several Windows features are malfunctioning.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart when both commands complete. If SFC reports that it repaired files, test Windows and Comodo again. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once.
Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work of hunting through repeated SFC and DISM runs by showing what its scan finds; repairs require the full version, and it is optional. Reinstalling Comodo remains the definitive fix when the missing file belongs to Comodo.

Do not expect SFC to restore guard32.dll. Windows protects its own component store, not every DLL installed by third-party security software.
Fix 5: Check permissions and run the installer elevated
An error such as Could not copy guard32.dll can occur when an update cannot replace a protected file.
- Download the current Comodo installer from Comodo’s official product source.
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Properties and check for an Unblock option on the General tab.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Right-click the installer again.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Close other security-management windows when the installer requests it.
- Complete the repair or reinstall.
- Restart Windows.
Do not manually copy the file while Comodo is running. The installer must replace the matching protection files and update their permissions together.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics, chipset, storage, or security driver is not the normal cause of a missing guard32.dll. Check drivers only if Device Manager shows an error or the system has broader crashes.

- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not replace guard32.dll with a driver package. The file is a Comodo application component, not a hardware driver.
Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for stale drivers instead of making you hunt through many hardware vendors; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. This is optional and does not replace reinstalling Comodo when Comodo owns the missing file.

Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong version, or the wrong architecture. A replacement may also have no matching signature or configuration and often leaves the damaged Comodo installation untouched.
Use Comodo’s official installer or repair process instead.

Do not copy the file beside a game or application
guard32.dll is not normal game middleware or a general Windows runtime. Copying it into an application’s folder can create an architecture mismatch and does not repair Comodo’s protection system.
Do not install Visual C++ for this error alone
Visual C++ Redistributable packages apply to errors naming files such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll. They do not normally provide guard32.dll.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no established reason to register guard32.dll this way, and commands such as these are not a default fix:
Best Value
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
regsvr32 guard32.dll
If the command reports that the entry point is missing, that does not mean the file needs to be downloaded or replaced.
Do not delete or rename the file permanently
Removing the file may stop an injection-related crash, but it also disables part of Comodo’s protection and can leave startup errors behind. Update, repair, or properly uninstall Comodo instead.
FAQ
Is guard32.dll a Windows file?
No. It belongs to Comodo Internet Security or Comodo Firewall. It is not a Windows runtime, DirectX file, .NET file, or standard Microsoft component.
What does the 32 mean?
It identifies the 32-bit protection module. A 32-bit application can load it even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Why is it in SysWOW64?
On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 is the standard location for many 32-bit system components. That does not make guard32.dll a Microsoft file; Comodo can install its 32-bit protection component there.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy does Chrome or another application mention it?
Comodo can load protection code into application processes. If that code conflicts with an application update, the application may identify guard32.dll as the faulting module.
Should I run System File Checker?
You can run DISM followed by SFC when Windows has broader corruption, but these commands are not the primary repair for a missing Comodo DLL. Repair or reinstall Comodo first.
What if every fix fails?
Record the full file path, digital-signature result, Comodo version, Windows version, recent update or quarantine event, and the related Application event-log entry. Give that information to Comodo support rather than installing an unverified replacement.
