Gyan Chaupar to Snakes and Ladders: How a Karmic Journey Became a Children’s Game

Snakes and Ladders descends from Gyan Chaupar, a varied Indian board-game tradition that used numbered routes, snakes and ladders to express spiritual ideas. Its transformation into a children’s race game was gradual.

Modern Snakes and Ladders descends from Gyan Chaupar, a family of Indian board games in which a numbered route, snakes and ladders could map spiritual progress, karma and religious cosmology. It was not one fixed game with one universal doctrine: surviving boards vary by community and design. The familiar children’s race game took shape through later adaptations, with its symbolism fading gradually rather than disappearing in a single change.

What was Gyan Chaupar?

Gyan Chaupar—also transliterated gyān caupaṛ—was a tradition of numbered board charts overlaid with snakes and ladders. Jacob Schmidt-Madsen describes the charts as “a sequentially numbered and inscribed grid diagram overlaid with snakes and ladders forming connections between individual squares.” Their imagery and inscriptions made the route more than a way to race to a finish: they could express ideas about karma, cosmography and religious practice.

Schmidt-Madsen argues that the charts developed from tantric drawings of the subtle body, used in meditation and visualization, and later acquired the features of a formal game. The surviving evidence does not establish that every board, or every player, used it for the same purpose. Play is clear; education, divination and personal self-exploration are possibilities, not universal functions demonstrated for the tradition.

Was Gyan Chaupar an ancient game?

It is safer not to call Gyan Chaupar thousands of years old. In his 2019 doctoral thesis, Jacob Schmidt-Madsen examines nearly 150 unique, mostly unpublished charts. Most surviving examples come from Vaishnava and Jain communities in 19th-century western India, with a few dating to the late 18th century. Based on this record, he argues that Gyan Chaupar likely arose in the late 17th or early 18th century.

That is a scholarly estimate from surviving evidence, not a precise date of invention. The record cannot establish a specific inventor or an exact birthplace, and a lack of older surviving boards is not proof that no earlier form existed. It does, however, make confident claims of a securely documented ancient origin unwarranted.

Why weren’t all the boards alike?

Gyan Chaupar was not a single canonical sacred board. Different religious communities adapted the chart to their own worldviews, and the number of squares, inscriptions and images could vary. Two museum records illustrate the range:

  • A Sufi Muslim board: The Ashmolean’s example is on British watermarked paper and has Persian and English inscriptions. The Sufi board tradition represents spiritual states and a path toward heaven.

These examples are evidence of variation, not a complete catalogue of every design or a basis for treating one tradition as the original standard. The most useful comparison with modern editions is to ask what the imagery and inscriptions communicate, what the snakes and ladders signify, and whether the board presents religious teaching or mainly structures a race to the finish.

How did it become Snakes and Ladders?

The transition was a sequence of adaptations, not one clean switch from religion to secular entertainment. ETH Library reports that the first game bearing the name Snakes and Ladders appeared in England in 1892. It used a spiral board with 100 spaces; a square-board version followed soon afterward. The mechanics of movement through numbered spaces, up ladders and down snakes made the game legible as a simple race.

Some early British boards still carried moral lessons, including virtues and vices, so the spiritual or moral dimension did not vanish immediately. In Schmidt-Madsen’s account, the game’s symbolic content was progressively reduced as the mechanics and numbers took precedence. ETH Library notes another sign of that shift: German editions around 1920 replaced snakes with fanciful scenes of children or animals. The familiar children’s game emerged as meaning was simplified and redesigned differently across editions.

What changed between the spiritual charts and the children’s game?

Feature Gyan Chaupar chart traditions Later Snakes and Ladders editions
Board and imagery Numbered grids with inscriptions, snakes and ladders; layouts and religious imagery varied by community. A British Museum Pahari-type example has 342 squares. The English game named Snakes and Ladders appeared in 1892 on a spiral 100-space board, followed by a square-board version. German editions around 1920 used fanciful scenes of children or animals instead of snakes, according to ETH Library.
Meaning of movement Snakes and ladders could form a path expressing spiritual progress, karma and cosmography; particular meanings depended on the board tradition. Early British editions could retain moralistic virtues and vices. Later versions increasingly emphasized the movement and race-game structure.
Purpose communicated by the board Religious or cosmological ideas are visible in surviving designs, though evidence does not establish one universal use beyond play. The familiar children’s form mainly presents a race-game structure; the historical transition was gradual and editions differed.

What the game’s mathematics can—and can’t—tell you

ETH Library reports that N.W. Bazley and P.J. Davis’s 1960 Monte Carlo study estimated an average of about 39.22 dice rolls to complete a particular 100-space board. This is a result for that modeled board, not a universal average for every Snakes and Ladders layout; different boards and rules can change the result.

Playing the modern descendant

A current Snakes and Ladders board can offer the simple race-game experience, but it should not be mistaken for a reproduction of a historical Gyan Chaupar chart. The older tradition’s boards varied in their religious imagery, inscriptions and structure; modern editions generally foreground the game’s movement mechanics.
