HELLDIVERS 2 passed 400,000 concurrent players on Steam in February 2024, while Arrowhead Game Studios announced a temporary cap of around 450,000 concurrent players overall to help stabilize its servers. The figures describe different things: Steam’s player count was a platform-specific observation, while Arrowhead’s cap was not identified as Steam-only.
What happened, and when?
| Date | Event | Figure and scope |
|---|---|---|
| February 17, 2024 | Arrowhead’s team message, reposted on the HELLDIVERS 2 Steam Community page, described server problems and announced a temporary concurrent-player cap. | Around 450,000 players overall; no exact PC/PS5 breakdown was given. Arrowhead team message |
| February 19, 2024 | Insider Gaming reported that the game had passed 400,000 concurrent Steam players. | 409,367 concurrent Steam players at the time of publication. Insider Gaming |
| February 24, 2024 | SteamDB’s historical chart recorded a later all-time Steam concurrent-player peak. | 458,709 concurrent Steam players; SteamDB chart times are UTC. SteamDB HELLDIVERS 2 charts |
The 409,367 figure and the later 458,709 peak are not conflicting counts: they refer to separate dates. The first was reported on February 19; SteamDB’s chart now shows the higher peak on February 24.
Why did Arrowhead cap Helldivers 2 players?
Arrowhead said server-related problems were affecting matches and progression. Its February 17 message said some mission payouts were failing, players were being kicked back to their ships, and some players were logging out. The team wrote: “Therefore we’ve had to cap our concurrent players to around 450,000 to further improve server stability.” The message was reposted on the HELLDIVERS 2 Steam Community page.
The cap was a response intended to improve stability amid those issues, not a statement that the game had reached a Steam-only limit. The same message advised players experiencing progression problems: “If you have progression related issues, please restart the game in order for things to sync back up.” Arrowhead team message, February 17, 2024

Was the 450,000 cap just for Steam?
No Steam-only scope was specified. Arrowhead described an overall concurrent-player cap of around 450,000, and the repost did not provide an exact platform split. Steam’s figures, by contrast, are counts of concurrent players on Steam. It would be inaccurate to treat either the February 19 Steam count or the February 24 Steam peak as the total across PC and PS5.
How long did the cap last?
The available announcement establishes that Arrowhead imposed the cap temporarily in February 2024 and said it would work with its partners to raise the ceiling. It does not establish when the cap ended. It should therefore be understood as a historical measure, not a current player limit.
