A May 2025 report said a project believed to be Half-Life 3 was playable from start to finish and in intensive play-testing. That was a claim attributed to rumor commentator Tyler McVicker, not confirmation from Valve. The report’s forecast of a summer announcement and release by the end of 2025 was not an official schedule—and later coverage still offered no confirmed reveal or release date.

What the May 2025 report actually claimed

HotHardware reported on May 5, 2025, that streamer Tyler McVicker had said during a livestream that the rumored game was playable from beginning to end and undergoing intensive play-testing. McVicker also predicted a possible summer 2025 announcement and a release by year-end. HotHardware explicitly framed the claims as rumor, not verified development information.

PCWorld’s coverage on the same day likewise attributed the claims to McVicker and said Valve had not officially announced Half-Life 3. “HLX” was described as a codename associated with the project in rumor coverage; neither the project’s identity nor its timing was confirmed by Valve. PCWorld’s report is useful context, not an independent Valve confirmation.

Did the predicted 2025 launch happen?

The year-end 2025 release was a prediction, not a confirmed launch date. Later coverage reported that a rumored tie-in between Half-Life 3 and a Steam Machine launch did not materialize. On July 10, 2026, ComicBook.com relayed a newer McVicker claim that the game was “almost complete,” but said he did not give a reveal or release date and urged caution in light of the earlier forecast. That report does not establish an imminent launch.

How to assess the different status claims

Claim Attribution and date What it establishes
Playable from start to finish; intensive play-testing Tyler McVicker, as reported by HotHardware and PCWorld on May 5, 2025 An attributed rumor claim about the project’s reported state—not a Valve confirmation or release date.
Summer 2025 announcement and year-end release forecast McVicker, as reported May 5, 2025 A prediction that was not an official schedule.
Game “almost complete” A newer McVicker claim reported by ComicBook.com on July 10, 2026 An unconfirmed status claim without a firm reveal or release date.

In February 2026, PC Gamer covered claims that the game was done and developers had moved to other projects. Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek, who left the company in 2017, responded sarcastically to the idea that a completed game would simply sit idle while its developers relaxed. His remarks mock that claim; they are not an official assessment of the game’s status. PC Gamer reports the exchange and its context.

Is Half-Life 3 coming to Steam Machine?

There is no confirmed evidence in these reports that Half-Life 3 will be a Steam Machine launch game or an exclusive. The rumored hardware tie-in did not happen as predicted. Separately, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais told Bloomberg that Valve prefers access to the wider PC game catalog over restricting games to exclusives. GamesRadar+ quoted him saying, “Restricting where people can play a game I don’t think is a great model, at least for us,” and, “We’re much more interested in having the whole PC catalog as our ‘launch exclusive.’” Those comments describe a general platform approach; they do not announce a Half-Life release plan. GamesRadar+ provides the hardware context.

What is known about an announcement or release date?

None of the cited coverage provides a firm, officially confirmed announcement date or release date. The May 2025 playable-build report and the July 2026 “almost complete” claim are attributed to McVicker, and neither supplies confirmation from Valve. Treat any specific launch window or Steam Machine connection as speculation unless Valve announces it directly.
