Half-Life 3 in 2025? What the HLX Playtesting Reports Actually Said

Reports of friends-and-family playtesting fueled Half-Life 3 rumors, but Valve never confirmed HLX as Half-Life 3 or announced a release date.

No: Half-Life 3 was not announced in 2025, and Valve has not confirmed that the project described in reports as “HLX” is Half-Life 3. The original story was an outside observer’s account of alleged playtesting—not a Valve announcement or a release schedule. Later reports made stronger claims about the project’s development, but no firm reveal or release date had been confirmed as of July 2026.

What the 2025 playtesting report claimed

In January 2025, Valve watcher Gabe Follower said playtesting on an internal project called “HLX” had expanded to include friends and family. Ars Technica reported that account, and HotHardware described HLX as an unknown internal codename for an unannounced Half-Life-related project. Neither report cited a Valve confirmation, and Valve had made no public statement about HLX. Ars Technica and HotHardware both presented the story as a report or rumor, not an official announcement.

Gabe Follower’s forecast was conditional, not a promised launch window. Ars Technica quoted him saying: “If it survives the New Year holidays and there are no serious problems during the playtests with a close circle of people, then the development will continue at the right pace and the announcement in 2025 may turn out to be quite possible.” That was Gabe Follower’s assessment as relayed by Ars Technica—not a statement from Valve.

Is HLX definitely Half-Life 3?

No. The reporting discussed HLX as a possible Half-Life-related project, but the sources do not show Valve officially identifying that codename as Half-Life 3. A codename, an alleged playtest, and outside observers’ interpretations are not equivalent to confirmation of a game’s title or status.

How the claims changed during 2025

When What was reported What it establishes
January 2025 Gabe Follower said HLX playtests had reached friends and family; he suggested an announcement in 2025 might be possible if the tests went well. Ars Technica An attributed, conditional report—not a Valve announcement or date.
March 2025 VICE covered additional rumor and datamine claims and cautioned that playtesting may shift stages or restart. VICE Playtesting alone does not demonstrate that development is nearly complete.
May 5, 2025 Video Games Chronicle reported Tyler McVicker’s claim that HLX was playable from beginning to end and being widely playtested. His suggested summer announcement and winter release were described as guesswork. VGC A stronger claim about development, still attributed to an outside commentator; the timing was speculation.
February 6, 2026 PC Gamer reported former Valve writer Chet Faliszek’s skepticism toward a separate claim that Half-Life 3 had secretly finished and staff had moved to other projects. PC Gamer The “finished” claim was disputed, not confirmed.
July 10, 2026 ComicBook.com said a reported Steam Machine launch tie-in had not happened and relayed a newer McVicker claim that the project was almost complete. The article gave no firm announcement or release date. ComicBook.com The development claim remained rumor, with no committed schedule.

Did Half-Life 3 come out or get announced in 2025?

No. The anticipated 2025 announcement did not materialize in the reporting reviewed, and the later expectation of a Steam Machine tie-in also did not occur. The July 2026 report still offered no confirmed reveal date or release date. The 2025 window should therefore be treated as a missed prediction, not a delayed official launch date.

Why playtesting does not give a release date

“Playtesting” describes people trying a build; it does not, by itself, reveal how much work remains, whether the project will ship, or when it might be announced. VICE noted that Valve’s playtesting can move between stages or restart. Even the later claim that HLX was playable end-to-end was an outside report, not an official progress update. Without a Valve schedule, converting either claim into a release window would go beyond what the reporting establishes.

How to judge the next Half-Life 3 headline

  • Check who is speaking. A Valve announcement would confirm more than an unnamed source, a datamine interpretation, or a commentator’s report.
  • Separate the claim from the inference. Evidence that a project is being tested does not prove its official title, completion, or release date.
  • Look for a concrete date from Valve. A predicted season or hardware tie-in remains speculation unless Valve commits to it.

Until Valve identifies HLX or announces a game, the accurate description is that outside observers have reported on a possible Half-Life-related project and its alleged testing—not that Half-Life 3 is confirmed or coming soon.
