In April 2025, Valve commentator Tyler McVicker said a project he called HLX was playable from beginning to end and undergoing widespread playtesting. That was an attributed claim, not a Valve announcement. His suggested summer 2025 announcement and winter 2025 release were speculation; that window has passed, and the reporting covered here establishes no official Half-Life 3 announcement, release date, or verified development status.
What the playtesting rumor said
McVicker made the claim during an April 2025 livestream. Notebookcheck summarized it on May 1 as a project that was playable end-to-end and being widely playtested. VGC reported on May 5 that McVicker associated the project with the internal codename HLX and described it as playable start to finish, with a sizable group testing it.

VGC also quoted McVicker saying, “The game is playable end-to-end, period.” The statement describes what he said about the project; it is not an independently verified account from Valve. “Playable end-to-end” does not establish a completion percentage or prove that development was nearly finished.
Was Half-Life 3 actually confirmed?
No. The reports do not include an official Valve confirmation that HLX is Half-Life 3, that the project was being playtested, or that a game was nearing release. McVicker is not presented in this coverage as a Valve spokesperson. The identification of HLX with Half-Life 3 remains an assumption in reporting, rather than a confirmed title.

A February 2025 Ars Technica report discussed datamined engine and update strings that McVicker interpreted as signs of optimization and polish. That is indirect evidence: code strings and a commentator’s interpretation cannot confirm a game’s identity or development status.
What happened to the winter 2025 release prediction?
McVicker’s reported forecast of a possible summer announcement and winter 2025 launch was explicitly characterized by VGC as guesswork, not a schedule or commitment from Valve. The forecast window has passed. Later coverage reviewed here did not establish that Half-Life 3 had been announced or released.

- Amazing new graphics with pre-rendered cutscenes that look like they came from the movies
- More realistic physics - Objects have varied and appropriate mass, density and physical properties
- Incredibly advanced AI as enemies adapt, plan, improvise, and respond
- Hordes of new aliens and other enemies, plus a plethora of new guns and weapons
PC Gamer’s coverage of Valve’s November 2025 announcements identified Steam Frame, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller—not Half-Life 3. Its February 2026 story covered another completion rumor and a sarcastic response from former Valve writer Chet Faliszek; neither is confirmation.

- Not confirmed: Valve has not, in the reporting covered here, confirmed that HLX is Half-Life 3 or made an official statement about its playtesting.
- Outdated prediction: The summer/winter 2025 timing was speculation, and the predicted period passed without a confirmed announcement in this coverage.
- Unknown: The available reporting does not establish the project’s current state, official title, platforms, features, announcement plans, or release date.
There are consequently no verified Half-Life 3 editions, platforms, or purchase options to compare. A future official announcement would be needed to answer those questions reliably.
