For Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential, the reported cost-citing share reached 40%, up from 37% for each. These are shares of people who had already canceled—not cancellation rates or evidence that more subscribers canceled overall.
What the 2026 figures say
AllThings. How reports the figures as findings from Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey. Its comparison is the share of recent cancellers who gave a cost-related reason:
| Service | Q1 2026 | Later 2026 survey | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online | 40% | 50% | 10 percentage points |
| Xbox Game Pass Essential | 37% | 40% | 3 percentage points |
| PlayStation Plus Essential | 37% | 40% | 3 percentage points |
The comparison and service-level figures are reported by AllThings.How. A separate September 2026 report by theGeek.games also attributes the findings to Circana and says Circana analyst Mat Piscatella shared them.
“Change” means percentage points in the share of surveyed cancellers giving a cost reason. It does not mean subscription prices rose by those percentages, nor that the number of cancellations increased by that amount.

What “cost” meant for Switch Online
The reported Nintendo Switch Online response was: “Couldn’t justify the cost of the subscription within my budget but liked the service.” AllThings. How presents this as a budget-and-value response: someone could still like the service yet decide its recurring expense no longer fit their budget. The survey response does not identify a specific price change as the cause.
What the figures do—and do not—show
The survey question concerns reasons given by people who had already canceled. It therefore describes the mix of reasons among cancellers, not the proportion of all subscribers who canceled. A larger cost-citing share could occur even if the total number of cancellations stayed flat or fell; the reported data do not establish whether overall cancellations rose.
Rank #2
- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Nor does the Switch Online result show that Nintendo raised its price. TheGeek.games reports that the U.S. price had not changed, so the finding supports a conclusion about reported budget pressure, not a causal claim about a price hike. It also should not be generalized beyond the geography and service tiers specified in the coverage.

The secondary reports attribute the figures to Circana’s Future of Insights for Video Games Consumer Survey, but the reviewed coverage does not provide the survey sample size or field dates.
