Halo: Campaign Evolved remakes the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign while adding a three-mission prequel, nine weapons, new vehicle options, 42 Skulls, and expanded co-op. It launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
What is new in Halo: Campaign Evolved?
The core is still the story and campaign of Halo: Combat Evolved, but this is more than a visual upgrade. Halo Studios has reworked levels and encounters, refreshed presentation and controls, and added story missions and gameplay options. Its 2025 announcement describes the original campaign as 13 missions; the remake adds three new missions before that story begins.
Three prequel missions: Operation: METEORITE
Operation: METEORITE follows Master Chief and Sergeant Avery Johnson one year before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved. Halo’s story reveal describes a new arc with new settings, enemies, and weapons. The three missions extend the campaign without replacing the original story.
Nine additional weapons
The remake brings nine additional weapons into the campaign sandbox, drawing equipment from elsewhere in the series. Announced examples include the Energy Sword, Battle Rifle, Needle Rifle, and Brute Plasma Rifle. The number is Halo Studios’ announced content count, not an independently measured total.

New vehicle options
- Hijacking: Players can hijack enemy vehicles.
- Wraith: The Wraith tank becomes drivable.
- Four-seat Warthog: A rear seat lets all four online co-op players ride together.
42 Skulls and Campaign Remix
Skulls modify gameplay, letting players change how a campaign run plays. Halo’s launch announcement lists 42 Skulls and introduces Campaign Remix, a mode built around mixing up campaign play. The announcement establishes the feature and count; it does not mean every Skull or modifier is available in every mission or setup.
How have the graphics, audio, and levels changed?
Halo’s official descriptions point to high-definition or 4K visuals, enhanced cinematics, updated animations, remastered music, rebuilt sound design, and newly recorded lines from returning cast members. These are presentation upgrades to the original campaign, not a new storyline replacing it.

Levels and encounters have also been rebuilt and reevaluated, including to support larger co-op groups. Creative Director Max Szlagor said the team was able to “carefully rebuild almost every level and every encounter with more fidelity.” The aim is to retain the campaign while updating how its spaces and fights work.

Halo lists the game for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Steam. The global launch date was July 28, 2026; early access began July 23. Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets had local dates one day later, so check the regional listing for exact availability.

What is the practical difference from the original campaign?
- For story-focused players: Operation: METEORITE adds three missions set a year before the original campaign, while the original story remains the foundation.
- For combat variety: Nine additional weapons, vehicle hijacking, Wraith driving, Skulls, and Campaign Remix expand the ways to approach encounters.
- For groups: Online co-op supports up to four players with cross-play and shared progression; console split-screen supports two.
