Yes—the Halo: Combat Evolved remake is real. It is called Halo: Campaign Evolved, and it launched on July 28, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC/Steam. Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets received it on July 29 local time. This is a ground-up remake of the original game’s campaign, not a newly released version of the original. Halo Waypoint announced the project; Halo Support lists its release and purchase details.
What the remake changes
Halo: Campaign Evolved rebuilds the campaign with high-definition visuals, updated cinematics, refined controls and level design, and remastered or rebuilt audio. It also adds three prequel missions starring Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson, additional weapons, vehicle changes, new enemies and gameplay-modifying Skulls. The official description calls it a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved’s campaign. Halo Waypoint’s announcement has the project overview.
How co-op and cross-play work
- Solo: Play the campaign alone.
- Split-screen: Console versions support two-player split-screen.
- Online co-op: Up to four players can play together, with cross-play across Xbox, PS5 and PC.
- Progression: Halo says progression is shared across platforms.
Those are distinct options: split-screen is for two players on console, while online co-op supports up to four across the listed platforms. Halo’s announcement describes the multiplayer features.
Release date and download size
The global launch was July 28, 2026, at 8 a.m. PDT; Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets had a July 29 local launch date. Eligible Premium and Collector’s Edition purchasers received early access beginning July 23. The release date has passed.

Halo Support’s July 28, 2026 release notes state a download size of 70 GB or less. That is the stated download figure, not a guarantee of the space required after installation or future updates. Physical copies
Physical Xbox Series X and PS5 editions contain platform-specific discs and work only on the platform they were bought for. A physical copy does not grant Xbox Play Anywhere. Choose the platform before buying a disc.
Digital Xbox purchases
Digital Xbox purchases support Xbox Play Anywhere between Xbox consoles and Windows PCs when you use the same Microsoft account. This is the cross-device option described for Xbox digital purchases; it does not make physical discs transferable.

Game Pass access
Halo Support lists the base game in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Its guide says Essential and Premium tiers do not include day-one base-game access. Subscription catalogs and terms can change, so confirm the current listing and tier in your region before subscribing for this game.
