If your group is compatible, verify the in-game invite flow, update each installation, then check whether the error is tied to a particular mission.
Check campaign and platform compatibility first
Before changing network settings, identify the exact MCC campaign and each player’s platform or storefront: Xbox console, Xbox app/Microsoft Store PC, Steam, or Steam Deck. Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide states that “Campaign and Campaign Playlists currently cannot use cross-play.” Check the current guidance for the specific title and platform pairing rather than assuming that campaign cross-play works across MCC.
If a Steam Deck is in the group
Halo Support’s Global Known Issues page says Steam Deck players cannot play Campaign Co-op or Spartan Ops with PC or Xbox players. The session may start, then eventually show “Connection Interrupted” or another disconnection. Campaign co-op is supported when every player in the group is on Steam Deck.
Do not generalize the Halo 3 exception
An April 2022 update introduced experimental PC-to-Xbox campaign co-op for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. That specific historical exception does not mean every MCC campaign supports cross-play. Confirm the current status for your exact game and platform combination.

Use the in-game roster to invite your friend
For online play, each player needs an Xbox network account. Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide instructs players to reach the MCC main menu, become Xbox network friends, and send the invitation from the in-game roster.
- Have both players open MCC and reach the main menu.
- Confirm that you are Xbox network friends.
- Open the in-game roster and invite your friend from there.
- If you close and restart MCC, send the invite again; roster invitations are not retained across a restart.
Subscription requirements depend on the platform and how the game is accessed. Check the applicable platform’s current requirements rather than assuming every player needs the same subscription.

Check whether the failure follows a particular mission
Note when the co-op session fails: during the invitation, while starting the campaign, or at a named mission, checkpoint, or action. Record the exact error message, especially if it says “Connection Interrupted.” Then check Halo Support’s live MCC Known Issues page for a matching entry.
Older update notes document mission-specific Halo 2 co-op disconnect scenarios, including Quarantine Zone, a Scorpion checkpoint, skipping the opening cutscene in Outskirts, and campaign playlists. A July 2023 update also said it made a Network Disconnect on Quarantine Zone less likely. These notes can help you describe a reproducible problem, but they are historical and do not establish that every listed issue is still active.

Update every player’s installation
Make sure everyone in the session has installed the latest available MCC update. Halo’s update notes say a cross-platform matchmaking issue affecting Xbox PC and Microsoft Store versions was addressed, with a download also required for Xbox consoles and Steam. That update addresses the specified matchmaking issue; it is not a general fix for every campaign co-op failure.

Check the live known-issues list, then submit a Halo Support ticket for an unlisted in-game bug. Include the campaign, mission or checkpoint, each player’s platform, when the failure happens, the exact error, and a screenshot or clip if available.

Halo Support’s Known Issues guidance routes account, purchase, network-connectivity, or hardware problems outside the game to Xbox Support; for Steam-related account, purchase, or connectivity issues, contact Steam Support.
Use local campaign co-op only when it fits your setup
Local split-screen campaign play is available on one Xbox console. PC players can play with friends over the Xbox network but cannot use split-screen. More than two local players on one console are limited to Multiplayer, not campaign co-op. See Halo Support’s Quick Start Guide for the platform and play-mode details.
