Game Freak confirmed that an attacker accessed one of its servers in August 2024 and that personal data relating to 2,606 people was affected. Separately, media reports described Pokémon development files appearing online, including source code, early designs and alleged information about future projects. Game Freak’s notice confirms the security incident and personal-data impact; it does not verify every file or project claim reported afterward.

What Game Freak confirmed about the breach

In a notice dated October 10, 2024, Game Freak said a third party accessed its server in August. The company reported that personal data relating to 2,606 people had been leaked. The affected group included current employees, contract workers and former employees, and the exposed information listed by Game Freak was names and company email addresses. Game Freak’s notice describes the company’s reported case count; it is not an independently audited total.

Game Freak said it was contacting affected people individually, had rebuilt and reinspected its servers, and would strengthen its security measures. The company apologized: “We sincerely apologize for the great inconvenience and concern caused to all concerned parties.”

What reports said the Pokémon-related files contained

In an October 13, 2024 report, Engadget described Pokémon-related materials appearing online, including source code, beta or scrapped designs, and alleged details about future projects. Those are reported contents of material attributed to the leak—not details authenticated in Game Freak’s public notice. Engadget’s account distinguished its reporting about files from the breach facts Game Freak confirmed.

The distinction matters: an internal-looking file, prototype, codename or schedule reported online does not establish that a game was approved, remained in development, or would be released. The available reporting also does not establish a total number of leaked files or designs.

How to read the reported future-game details now

Leak-era project names and schedules should not be treated as current release information. Nintendo later officially announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves for Nintendo Switch 2, planned for 2027. That is the current official announcement as of October 2026; the release plan may change. Nintendo’s announcement is the appropriate source for that confirmed information, rather than older claims attributed to leaked material.

This later announcement does not, by itself, verify that a particular codename or schedule reported in 2024 referred to either game. Keep the leak-era claims separate from Nintendo’s later official wording and plans.

Later development material is not automatically part of the breach

A July 2026 GamesRadar+ report covered a newly surfaced documentary about development of Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl. That is a separate source of historical development material, not evidence that the documentary came from the 2024 server breach. GamesRadar+’s report should be understood on its own terms, not folded into the 2024 incident.
