Halo Wars: Definitive Edition is an enhanced real-time strategy game, not a new first-person shooter. Its official listings describe improved graphics, new achievements, and all DLC from the original game. Whether it is a good fit depends chiefly on whether you want a Halo story told through an RTS and which platform your friends use.
Is Halo Wars: Definitive Edition worth playing?
For players interested in a strategy take on the Halo universe, the Definitive Edition offers the original game with the listed enhancements and DLC. The story follows the UNSC Spirit of Fire’s conflict with the Covenant more than two decades before the events of Halo: Combat Evolved, according to Xbox Wire’s launch announcement.

Steam’s English user-review aggregate was labeled “Very Positive” when observed in 2026, with 92% of 6,062 English reviews positive. That is a changing Steam user rating, not a professional critic score or a permanent measure of reception. No named critic review or attributable critic score is established here, so there is no basis for claiming a professional consensus.
What does the Definitive Edition include?
Xbox and Steam describe it as an enhanced release with improved graphics, new achievements, and all DLC from the original game. Steam also lists single-player, online PvP, and online co-op. These are official product-page descriptions; they do not establish current matchmaking activity or queue times.

The standalone edition became available on April 20, 2017. Xbox Wire announced a $19.99 launch price at the time; that historical price does not establish what the game costs now. The original conflict and its place in the Halo timeline are summarized in Xbox Wire’s announcement.
Which version should you choose?
Choose based on your device, storefront, and the platform your friends use. Xbox’s product listing covers Xbox One and Windows 10, while Steam lists the Windows PC edition. The available official information does not establish performance parity, control differences, save transfer, or current multiplayer population between versions.

Xbox Wire described Xbox and Windows digital purchases as Xbox Play Anywhere at launch, but that is historical information rather than a guarantee of current eligibility or terms. Consult the launch announcement alongside the current store listing before relying on it.
Can Xbox players play with friends on Steam?
No cross-play between the Xbox version and Steam version is supported, according to the Xbox product page: “Cross-play with Steam versions of the same game is not supported.” If playing together is important, make sure everyone chooses a compatible storefront rather than buying on different platforms.

Is Halo Wars: Definitive Edition single-player or multiplayer?
It supports single-player as well as online PvP and online co-op, according to the Steam listing. The listing does not reveal how active matchmaking is now, so the presence of online modes should not be taken as evidence of populated queues or reliable matchmaking at a particular time.
