Xbox Cloud Gaming’s native mouse-and-keyboard support is now useful, but it is not a replacement for local PC gaming. In compatible games, keyboard input and mouse aiming can feel convincingly PC-like. The drawbacks are just as important: support remains title-by-title, cloud latency is more obvious with a mouse, and browser or client focus can still cause problems.
Microsoft reported more than 190 cloud games with mouse-and-keyboard support in its April 30, 2026 update. That is a substantial expansion from the original 25-title rollout in 2024, but it is still only part of the cloud catalog.

What Xbox Cloud Gaming actually supports
This is native input support in selected Xbox games, not a universal system that translates every keyboard and mouse into controller commands.
A compatible game recognizes the devices itself, can expose keyboard bindings, and may switch to mouse-specific aiming and interface behavior. A third-party tool that maps mouse movement to a virtual gamepad is different: it can make unsupported games playable, but it does not provide true mouse aiming or a full keyboard layout.

Microsoft announced the feature in May 2024, initially for 25 titles through supported browsers and the Windows Xbox app. Microsoft’s developer guidance says that a console game with mouse-and-keyboard support should also work through Xbox Cloud Gaming, but the developer still has to implement that support in the Xbox version of the game. A PC version supporting mouse and keyboard does not automatically make its cloud-streamed version compatible.
For the current catalog, Microsoft’s console keyboard-and-mouse filter is a useful starting point. Treat it as a catalog aid rather than a guarantee that every region, edition, browser, or device will behave identically.
Which games benefit most?
Mouse and keyboard make the biggest difference in:
- First-person shooters
- Strategy and simulation games
- Management games
- MMO-style games
- Titles with extensive menus, inventories, and hotkeys
They are less compelling in racing games, fighting games, platformers, and many third-person action games designed around analog movement. A controller may feel more natural even when the game technically supports both input methods.

Microsoft’s April 2026 update listed recent additions including Amazing Maze, Dragonkin: The Banished, Easy Delivery Co., Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf, Super Meat Boy 3D, and Sword and Fairy Together Forever. The list is not exhaustive and will change as games are added or removed.

How to enable mouse and keyboard
- Connect a physical USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.
- Open Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser such as Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome, or use the Windows Xbox app where supported.
- Sign in and launch a game that explicitly supports mouse and keyboard.
- Enter full-screen streaming mode.
- Click inside the stream so it captures keyboard and mouse input.
- Open the game’s input settings and adjust sensitivity, key bindings, and aiming options.
Full-screen mode was required in Microsoft’s original preview instructions and remains a sensible first troubleshooting step. Menu labels and client behavior may change as Xbox updates its web and app interfaces.
If the input does not work
- Exit and re-enter full-screen mode.
- Click the stream again to restore focus.
- Disconnect and reconnect the peripherals.
- Try Edge or Chrome instead of the Xbox app, or the reverse.
- Restart the cloud session.
- Test a second confirmed compatible game.
- Disable extensions that modify page focus, input, or gamepad behavior.
- Try wired peripherals to rule out Bluetooth pairing, battery, and sleep issues.
Controller prompts do not always prove that mouse and keyboard are unsupported. However, persistent controller-only prompts combined with nonfunctional input usually indicate a compatibility or focus problem.
How good does mouse aiming feel?
When the game, client, and connection cooperate, mouse aiming is substantially more precise than controller aiming. Menus are faster, keyboard shortcuts are more convenient, and PC players do not need to relearn a controller layout.
The limitation is that cloud streaming adds delay between movement and visible response. Mouse aiming exposes this more readily than an analog stick. Small timing errors, changing camera response, image compression, inconsistent frame pacing, and network jitter can all make tracking or quick turns feel less predictable.

Average latency is not the whole story. A stable connection can feel playable even when it is not as responsive as local hardware, while Wi-Fi congestion or a distant cloud server can make the same game unpleasant. Cloud performance also depends on encoding, transmission, decoding, and display delay.
Selected titles can support user-selected resolutions up to 1440p under supported conditions, according to Microsoft’s November 2025 update. That does not mean every game streams at 1440p, nor does higher resolution remove input delay or compression.
Native support versus browser workarounds
Unofficial tools such as Better xCloud offer browser enhancements, streaming controls, diagnostics, and mouse-and-keyboard-related workarounds. They are not Microsoft-supported and can break when Xbox changes its web interface.

It may help with a game that accepts only gamepad input, but it generally cannot reproduce precise mouse aiming, independent keyboard bindings, or the game’s proper input prompts. Users should also consider privacy, account, and compatibility risks before installing third-party browser tools.

Browser, app, Chromebook, and TV differences
Microsoft supports Xbox Cloud Gaming through browsers on Windows PCs, Chromebooks, iOS, Android, and other supported platforms, including selected televisions and headsets. That does not mean mouse and keyboard behave identically everywhere.
Windows browsers provide the clearest PC-style setup. A Chromebook can be a practical low-install option if its browser, operating system, peripherals, and region support the required behavior. Mobile, TV, and headset clients may have different input restrictions, and a keyboard-and-mouse setup that works in Edge on Windows may not work in a television app.
Cloud access also depends on market availability, device support, subscription entitlement, and the particular game. Microsoft’s April 2026 update said subscribers on Ultimate, Premium, and Essential could stream more than 1,000 owned games, subject to catalog and device restrictions. Check the current Xbox Game Pass page rather than relying on an old plan or price.

A controller is also the better diagnostic fallback. If a title works with a controller but not with your mouse, the cloud session itself may be healthy and the problem may be title support, input capture, or the client.

Can it replace local PC gaming?
For most PC gamers, no. Xbox Cloud Gaming with mouse and keyboard is best understood as a useful supplementary PC-like experience.
Local gaming remains preferable if you need universal mouse-and-keyboard support, competitive shooter responsiveness, high refresh rates, consistent image quality, mods, extensive graphics settings, local configuration control, or access to PC-only games. It also avoids browser-focus failures and depends less on server distance and network stability.
Cloud Gaming makes more sense when you already have Game Pass, want to avoid a large download, use a low-powered laptop or Chromebook, have limited storage, or mainly play slower-paced compatible games. It is especially convenient for trying a game before committing to a local installation.
Verdict
Xbox Cloud Gaming’s mouse-and-keyboard support has matured from an experiment into a credible feature. Microsoft’s reported total of more than 190 compatible cloud games as of April 30, 2026 gives PC-oriented players a meaningful selection.
But the experience is still solid rather than great. Compatibility is not universal, PC support does not automatically transfer to the Xbox version, mouse aiming reveals cloud latency, and browser or device behavior can vary. Use it for selected games and convenient access—not as a universal replacement for a gaming PC or a controller.
