Upgrade through Benny’s when you want one of its distinctive vehicle conversions and custom styling; choose Hao’s Special Works (HSW) when your exact car is eligible, your version of GTA Online supports HSW, and you want that upgrade path. There is no evidence here for a universal fastest or best-value winner: eligibility, platform, purpose and current in-game cost all matter.
What’s the difference between Benny’s and HSW?
They are different modification paths, not two interchangeable performance packages. Benny’s is known for bespoke conversions and appearance choices. Rockstar lists options including hydraulics, liveries, interiors, chassis choices, engine details, bespoke wheels and tire designs in its Title Update 1.30 notes.

HSW is a separate upgrade path whose availability depends on the particular vehicle and supported game platform or edition. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.72 notes, dated April 6, 2026, identify the Vapid FMJ MK V as HSW-upgradeable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and GTAV Enhanced on PC. That example confirms support for that car on those platforms; it does not establish eligibility for every vehicle or edition.

How to check whether your car is eligible
- Identify the exact vehicle. A model’s name or resemblance to an eligible car is not enough; confirm the specific vehicle’s options in the game.
- Check the relevant modification location. Look for a Benny’s conversion at Benny’s, or an HSW upgrade where that service is available. The in-game options are more useful for an individual car than an example list from an older update.
- Confirm your platform and edition for HSW. Rockstar’s update announcements apply to the named cars and platforms in their context. For example, the FMJ MK V appears in the April 6, 2026 Title Update 1.72 notes for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GTAV Enhanced on PC.
- Compare the current price and result before spending. Costs and performance comparisons are not established by the official sources cited here. Use the current in-game price and, if performance is the goal, reliable measurements for the same car, platform and conditions.
What Rockstar’s vehicle examples do—and don’t—tell you
Rockstar’s original Benny’s list names the Willard Faction, Declasse Moonbeam, Albany Buccaneer, Declasse Voodoo, Albany Primo and Vapid Chino. A later April 16, 2020 promotion gives additional examples, including the Bravado Banshee 900R and Pfister Comet Retro Custom. These are examples from particular Rockstar publications, not a complete current eligibility roster. The event page’s discount was historical, not a current price.

HSW examples also need to be read in context. Rockstar’s Chop Shop announcement describes some vehicles as available for HSW modification on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; the April 2026 update names the FMJ MK V for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and GTAV Enhanced on PC. Neither statement should be stretched into a claim that every HSW car works on every version.
Why a vehicle might not offer the upgrade
Eligibility is not only about Benny’s or HSW. Rockstar Support’s vehicle modification guidance says players can modify vehicles from Benny’s, Legendary Motorsport and Southern San Andreas Super Autos, as well as most vehicles obtained from the street or NPCs. It excludes Pegasus vehicles, certain emergency vehicles, another player’s personal vehicle and vehicles obtained through glitches or exploits from ordinary modification or sale. This is broad guidance, not a full list of Benny’s or HSW-compatible cars.

Can you rank the upgrades by speed or value?
Not from the available official evidence. Rockstar’s Benny’s notes describe customization categories, and its HSW updates name particular cars and platforms; the sources cited here do not provide comparable current prices or measured gains across a complete set of cars. Rockstar’s Los Santos Drug Wars announcement uses the line, “But remember — where some mod shops shoot for the moon, Hao’s Special Works hurtles straight into the center of the sun.” That is promotional wording, not a measured result or a substitute for a vehicle-by-vehicle comparison.
For a recommendation on one exact car, first verify that the conversion appears for that vehicle on your version of the game. Then compare the in-game cost and the outcome you actually want—distinctive customization or an HSW upgrade—rather than assuming one shop is universally faster or cheaper.
