HAProxy is a high-performance TCP and HTTP load balancer and reverse proxy. It accepts connections from clients, applies routing rules, and sends each connection or request to an available backend server. It can terminate TLS at the edge, pass encrypted traffic through, or create a second encrypted connection to backend servers.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
For a game API, matchmaking service, launcher download endpoint, or web control panel, HAProxy provides one stable entry point while distributing work across multiple servers. The right design depends on protocol mode, connection duration, server capacity, session state, health-check depth, TLS placement, and whether traffic must cross datacenters.

HAProxy sits between clients and a pool of application servers. Clients connect to HAProxy rather than choosing an individual server. HAProxy then makes a selection using configured rules and a balancing algorithm, maintains the connection, and forwards traffic until the session ends.
The most useful mental model is frontend → rules → backend:

- Frontend: a listening address and port that accepts client traffic.
- Rules: decisions based on protocol data, HTTP headers, TLS SNI, source attributes, cookies, or runtime state.
- Backend: the server pool, balancing method, health checks, connection limits, and related policies.
In TCP mode, the balancing decision normally applies to the whole connection. HTTP mode can inspect each request and use Layer-7 information such as a path, host header, or cookie. That distinction matters for long-lived game connections: moving a request between servers is possible in HTTP mode, but an established TCP or WebSocket session generally remains on the server selected when it connected.
HAProxy is not an application server or a database. It does not make a stateless service stateful, replicate player sessions, or repair a broken dependency. It can, however, keep failed instances out of rotation and expose the operational information needed to diagnose those problems.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow a client request travels through HAProxy
- Connection arrival: the client resolves a public address and opens a TCP connection to the frontend listener.
- Protocol handling: HAProxy operates in TCP mode for opaque streams or HTTP mode when it must parse requests and responses.
- Rule evaluation: configured rules can inspect source information, HTTP headers, URL paths, cookies, TLS SNI, and other available state.
- Backend selection: HAProxy filters out servers that are down or disabled, then applies the selected balancing algorithm.
- Forwarding: traffic is sent to the chosen server, optionally over a new TLS connection.
- Runtime monitoring: logs, statistics, queues, connection counters, and health-check results show what happened and support controlled changes.
This separation lets one frontend route several services. For example, a host name for an API can go to one backend, an administrative path to another, and a raw game protocol to a TCP backend. Keep rules specific: an overly broad match can send traffic to the wrong pool while appearing healthy at the proxy layer.
Choosing a balancing algorithm
No algorithm is universally fastest. Select one by looking at request or connection duration, whether servers have equal capacity, how much state is stored locally, and whether clients need to stay associated with one server.
| Algorithm | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Round robin | Similar servers handling similarly sized, short-lived work | Simple and predictable, but it does not account for a server that is slower, more heavily loaded, or handling longer sessions. |
| Weighted round robin | Pools with unequal CPU, memory, bandwidth, or instance sizes | Weights express expected capacity; they do not react automatically to every transient load spike. |
| Least connections | Connections whose durations vary substantially, such as persistent API or WebSocket sessions | Favors the server with fewer active connections, but one connection may consume far more resources than another. |
| Hash or consistent hash | Affinity to a key such as client identity, URL, or cookie | Can preserve locality, but membership changes can remap keys and reduce flexibility unless the hashing design is chosen carefully. |
| Bounded-load consistent hashing | Affinity is required while preventing a hash target from becoming excessively loaded | Availability and exact syntax depend on the deployed HAProxy version; confirm the feature in that version’s manual. |
Round robin and weights
Round robin sends successive selections around the pool. It is a good baseline for identical game-service instances behind a stateless HTTP API. Add weights when one instance has materially more capacity than another, and document how those weights were determined so an infrastructure change does not silently make the distribution unfair.

Least connections
Least-connections is useful when sessions remain open for very different lengths. A matchmaking request that ends quickly and a live WebSocket that lasts an hour should not be treated as equivalent work. The method still counts connections, not CPU time or message rate, so watch backend saturation rather than assuming the count is a perfect load measurement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Hashing and affinity
Hashing can keep a player, URL, or cookie associated with the same server. That helps when session data remains in process memory or when a cache is local. It is a workaround for missing shared state, not a substitute for a shared session store. When servers join or leave, keys can move; consistent-hash variants limit unnecessary movement but cannot eliminate it.
Health checks and failure handling
HAProxy’s health checks determine which servers are eligible for new traffic. As HAProxy’s configuration documentation puts it, “Health checks ensure that only healthy servers are kept in the load balancing rotation.”
Active checks
Active checks periodically connect to a server or send a protocol-specific request. A basic port-open test proves only that something accepted a connection. An application-level HTTP check can require a particular method, status code, response content, SNI name, TLS handshake, or HTTP/2 behavior. Use a path that exercises the dependency that actually matters: a process can return a nominal status while its database, cache, or session service is unusable.
Fall and rise thresholds
After the configured number of consecutive failures, HAProxy marks a server down and removes it from rotation. After enough consecutive successes, it places the server back. Conservative fall and rise values prevent a single packet loss from ejecting a healthy instance and prevent a flapping instance from repeatedly receiving traffic. Set intervals and thresholds with the service’s startup time and failure impact in mind.

Passive checks
Passive checks react to errors observed during real traffic, such as TCP failures or HTTP errors. They complement active checks: active probes can detect a failure before a user arrives, while passive observations can reveal a failure mode that the probe does not exercise.
What to inspect when a server is unexpectedly down
- Confirm that the check reaches the intended address, port, protocol, SNI name, and path.
- Compare the check’s expected status or content with what the application actually returns.
- Look for dependency failures that make the endpoint unhealthy even though the process is running.
- Check fall and rise counters for intermittent failure rather than treating every down event as a permanent outage.
- Verify that a maintenance drain or administrative disable was not mistaken for a health failure.
TCP mode, HTTP mode, and long-lived game sessions
Use TCP mode when HAProxy must carry an opaque protocol or when the backend needs to see the original encrypted stream. The proxy chooses a server for the connection and does not interpret application messages.
Use HTTP mode when routing needs request-level information. Host names, paths, headers, cookies, status codes, and HTTP-specific health checks become available. This is appropriate for game APIs, account services, telemetry endpoints, and web dashboards that share an entry point.
Persistent sessions change the capacity calculation. A server with fewer connections can still be overloaded if those connections generate high message rates or large buffers. For WebSockets and similar streams, combine an algorithm suited to long-lived connections with explicit connection limits and monitoring of queue depth, memory, and backend latency.
Where TLS should terminate
HAProxy supports three common TLS topologies. The correct choice balances inspection, certificate operations, and protection of the second network hop.

| Terminate at HAProxy | HAProxy decrypts the client connection and sends cleartext or separately encrypted traffic to the backend. | Centralizes certificates and enables HTTP-aware routing and checks. The HAProxy-to-backend segment must be protected if its network is not fully trusted. |
| TLS passthrough | HAProxy carries the encrypted stream in TCP mode; the backend terminates TLS. | Preserves end-to-end termination at the application server, but prevents normal Layer-7 inspection and HTTP routing. Limited TLS metadata such as SNI may still be available for selection. |
| Terminate and re-encrypt | HAProxy terminates client TLS, then opens a verified TLS connection to the backend. | Combines centralized edge policy with encryption on the second hop. Certificate verification, trust stores, protocol versions, and health-check TLS settings must be configured consistently. |
When using SNI, ensure the client name, certificate selection, and backend routing rules agree. ALPN settings must match the protocols you intend to negotiate, such as HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2. A health check that uses TLS needs the same essential server name and verification assumptions as production traffic; otherwise the check can report a false failure or a false success.
Load balancing across datacenters
Global balancing is useful when players are geographically dispersed, a datacenter must be removed during maintenance, or data-residency rules require placement in a particular region. HAProxy ALOHA global server load balancing can return a datacenter address based on client geography and datacenter health. Unavailable addresses are removed from DNS responses.
DNS-based steering has an unavoidable delay: resolvers and clients cache answers until the response’s TTL expires. A datacenter can be declared unhealthy immediately, yet some clients continue using its old address until their cached record ages out. Choose TTLs with this failure window in mind, and do not claim instant failover from DNS alone.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Design | Control speed | Strengths | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| DNS-based global balancing | Bound by resolver and client caching | Directs users toward a nearby healthy datacenter and can remove unavailable addresses from answers. | Existing cached addresses persist; behavior varies among resolvers, and operations span DNS plus each regional site. |
| Single regional proxy | Controlled directly by the proxy | One policy point and fast backend changes within that region. | Users far from the region incur extra latency, and the proxy region becomes a concentration of failure. |
For stateful game sessions, global routing should happen before a session is established or through an explicit session-directory design. Sending a player to a new datacenter mid-session does not move the in-memory state with the TCP connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical deployment workflow
- Inventory the service: record protocol, listener ports, expected connection duration, request rate, session state, backend capacity, and geographic requirements.
- Define the frontend: choose the bind address, port, TCP or HTTP mode, client timeouts, and TLS topology.
- Build the backend pool: list server addresses, ports, weights where needed, connection limits, and the balancing method.
- Design the check: select a protocol-appropriate probe, expected response, SNI and TLS parameters, interval, and fall/rise thresholds.
- Decide on affinity: prefer shared session storage for stateless routing; use cookies or hashing only when locality is necessary and remapping is acceptable.
- Validate before reload: run the configuration validator supplied with your installed HAProxy version, then review the resulting warnings rather than treating a syntactically valid file as operationally correct.
- Exercise failure paths: take one backend out of service, confirm that new traffic avoids it, restore it, and verify that it returns only after the intended success threshold.
- Reload with rollback ready: keep the previous known-good configuration and a tested procedure for returning to it if listeners, certificates, or routing rules fail.
A minimal illustrative backend might use a pool of application servers with a round-robin policy and an application-level check. Adapt directive names, TLS options, timeouts, and addresses to the exact HAProxy release and your service; do not copy a generic example into production without validating it.

Operations, observability, and version awareness
Run HAProxy as an operational system, not a set-and-forget configuration file. Use structured logs that identify the frontend, backend, selected server, termination state, timing fields, and response outcome. Make health-check status and queue depth visible alongside application metrics.
The runtime statistics interface and administrative CLI can show server state, current sessions, queues, errors, and counters without waiting for a log search. Stick tables and peers can support rate controls or shared state, but they add design and failure considerations. Recent HAProxy releases have added or improved thread-group-aware algorithms, queues, stick tables, peer behavior, HTTP handling, TLS configuration, CLI functions, and tracing. These capabilities are version-sensitive: check the manual for the version actually deployed before relying on a directive or runtime command.
Always test configuration validation, reload behavior, certificate replacement, and rollback in an environment that resembles production. A reload that preserves existing sessions but fails to bind a new certificate can leave old traffic working while all new connections fail.
Capacity planning and performance claims
There is no single HAProxy throughput number that represents every deployment. Results vary with hardware, protocol, TLS cipher, payload size, concurrency, connection duration, logging, rules, and backend behavior. A benchmark without those conditions cannot predict capacity for a game service.
Measure the limits that affect your workload: concurrent connections, new connections per second, requests per second, TLS handshakes, CPU saturation, memory and buffer use, backend queue time, and tail latency. Test both steady traffic and bursts such as a game launch or tournament start. Leave headroom for health checks, administrative access, certificate operations, and failover when one server is unavailable.
Quick Recap
Common failure patterns and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | First corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| All backends show down | Wrong check port, path, protocol, SNI, or expected response | Run the same probe manually from the HAProxy host and compare every check parameter with the service’s listener. |
| One server receives far more traffic | Unequal capacity, stale persistent connections, weights, or affinity | Inspect algorithm, weights, connection age, and stickiness before changing the method. |
| Users see intermittent errors during deploys | Health checks are too shallow or rise thresholds are too low | Make the check exercise the required dependency and require enough successful probes before reintegration. |
| HTTP routing never matches | Traffic is in TCP mode or TLS is being passed through | Terminate TLS where Layer-7 inspection is required, or move the routing decision to the backend. |
| Failover is not immediate across regions | DNS answers remain cached | Account for TTL and resolver behavior; use a design whose control point matches the required recovery time. |
| Long-lived sessions overload a nominally quiet server | Connection count does not represent message rate or resource cost | Track per-connection workload, queueing, memory, and application latency, then adjust limits or architecture. |
A decision framework for HAProxy designs
- Need path, host, cookie, or header routing? Use HTTP mode and terminate TLS where those fields are visible.
- Need to preserve backend TLS termination? Use TCP passthrough and accept the loss of ordinary Layer-7 inspection.
- Have equal, short-lived workloads? Start with round robin.
- Have unequal server sizes? Use weights and verify the result with capacity metrics.
- Have highly variable connection duration? Evaluate least-connections and monitor actual resource use.
- Need local state affinity? Use a carefully chosen hash or cookie policy, while planning for key movement and server changes.
- Need geographic placement or datacenter failover? Use global DNS steering only after accounting for TTL-based caching and session state.
- Need dependable recovery? Combine application-level checks, sensible fall/rise thresholds, observable runtime state, and a tested rollback process.
