What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A recurring FTP password prompt usually means the client and server disagree about the login mode, the account is not authorized for the requested path, or the client profile is not retaining credentials. In IIS, choose either Anonymous or Basic authentication deliberately, then check FTP Authorization Rules and the Windows folder permissions. In FileZilla, select Anonymous for an anonymous server, or use Normal/Account with password storage enabled when the server requires a named login. Treat passive-mode errors separately: they affect listings and transfers after login, not the initial password exchange.

What a repeated password prompt actually tells you
FTP uses a control connection for commands such as login, directory changes and transfers, then opens a separate data connection for listings and file movement. A client that keeps displaying a username-and-password dialog is normally failing at the control-connection authentication or authorization stage. Re-entering the same password rarely fixes a configuration mismatch.

| What you see in the log | Likely layer | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
A 530 response, followed by another login attempt |
Authentication or authorization | Anonymous versus named login mode, account validity, FTP Authorization Rules and filesystem permissions |
| The server accepts the login, but the client asks again immediately | Client profile or a rejected identity | Whether the selected login type matches the server and whether the saved password is valid and available to the client |
227 Entering Passive Mode, followed by a timeout or failed listing |
Data-channel connectivity | Passive port range, host firewall, NAT and cloud security-group rules; do not change the password first |
| Login succeeds and a directory opens, but a particular folder or operation fails | Authorization or filesystem access | FTP Authorization Rules and the Windows account’s permissions on that directory |
Start with the client log rather than the prompt itself. A password dialog is a user-interface symptom; the response code and the command immediately before it identify the failing layer. Save a short log covering one connection attempt so that you can see whether the server rejected credentials, denied a resource, or accepted login and then failed on a data connection.
Step 1: Confirm the server’s intended authentication mode
On an IIS FTP site, the first decision is whether users should connect anonymously or with a local or domain account. IIS documents Anonymous authentication as access without a user account, while Basic authentication validates a local or domain account. Enable the mode that matches the intended identity; an accidental mixture causes clients to keep offering credentials that the site is not prepared to use.

| Mode | Identity supplied by the client | When it fits | Common mismatch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anonymous | No individual account credentials | A public or shared drop location where the server is configured to accept anonymous sessions | The client is set to Normal or Basic and keeps sending a username and password that anonymous access does not use |
| Basic | A valid local or domain username and password | Named users, per-user permissions and auditing | The client chooses Anonymous, uses the wrong account format, or supplies a password that is not valid for the configured account |
Set Anonymous access in IIS
- Open IIS Manager and select the FTP site, not only the server node.
- Open FTP Authentication.
- Enable Anonymous Authentication when the site is meant to accept unauthenticated sessions.
- Disable Basic Authentication unless you have a deliberate reason to offer a named-login path as well. Leaving an unintended mode enabled makes diagnosis harder because different clients may choose different methods.
- Open FTP Authorization Rules and add an allow rule for anonymous users, limited to the operations and paths the site should expose.
- Check the physical directory’s permissions for the IIS anonymous identity. Authentication mode alone does not grant read, write or list rights on the underlying Windows folder.
Configure the client as Anonymous after making this change. If the client still prompts for a password, inspect the log for a 530 response and verify that no user-isolation setting is making anonymous access unsupported, as described below.
Set Basic access in IIS
- In IIS Manager, select the FTP site and open FTP Authentication.
- Enable Basic Authentication and disable Anonymous Authentication if every session must identify a user. If both are intentionally enabled, document which users are expected to use each path and test them separately.
- Open FTP Authorization Rules. Add an allow rule for the specific local account, domain account or group that should connect. Grant only the read, write, delete or other operations that are required.
- Confirm that the account is valid in the relevant local computer or domain, is not disabled or expired, and has the expected password.
- On the physical FTP directory, grant the same account or group the Windows permissions required for the allowed operations. A successful Basic login does not override an NTFS denial.
- Configure the client as a named login and retry once. If the server returns
530, use the server and client logs to determine whether the rejection occurred during authentication or when the requested resource was authorized.
Understand the two permission checks
IIS performs two different decisions. Authentication establishes who the session represents, or that it is anonymous. Authorization determines whether that identity may use the FTP site and perform the requested operation. Windows filesystem permissions then govern access to the actual directory and files. Passing one check does not imply that the other checks will pass.

Review the site’s FTP Authorization Rules and look for an allow rule that matches the identity used by the client. A rule for a named user does not automatically allow every member of a different group, and an anonymous rule does not authorize a Basic-authenticated account. Also check whether the rule permits the operation that failed: a user may be able to list or download while being denied upload or deletion.

Check Windows folder permissions
Inspect the security permissions on the FTP root and each child directory involved in the operation. Verify that the account represented by the session has the needed read, write, list or modify rights and that no inherited deny entry overrides an allow entry. Test the exact path shown in the log rather than only the site root; virtual directories and nested folders can have different permissions.
Use a minimal, repeatable test
- Choose one test account or the anonymous identity and one small test directory.
- Grant only the intended FTP authorization and filesystem rights to that identity.
- Connect with the matching client login type and record the server response.
- Test listing, download and upload separately. The first operation that fails identifies which permission needs attention.
- After the test succeeds, apply the same pattern to production directories instead of broadly granting rights to every account.
Remove the IIS anonymous-access and user-isolation conflict
Microsoft documents a repeated anonymous-credentials prompt in Internet Explorer when anonymous login is selected and states that the behavior is by design. Microsoft also documents anonymous access with Active Directory User Isolation as an unsupported combination. If your IIS site uses both settings, do not try to solve the prompt by repeatedly entering a password; change the design.
Choose one supported design
- Anonymous site: keep Anonymous Authentication, remove the conflicting Active Directory User Isolation configuration, and control exposure with FTP Authorization Rules and filesystem permissions.
- Per-user isolated site: turn off anonymous access and use Basic authentication with valid local or domain accounts, then configure the user-isolation design for those named identities.
After changing the settings, close and reopen the client session so it does not reuse a cached authentication attempt. Confirm the result in the log: the successful mode should produce a completed login, not an endless sequence of rejected anonymous or named credentials.

Correct the FileZilla connection profile
FileZilla’s site profile has a Logon Type that must agree with the server. FileZilla Pro documents Anonymous as a connection without authentication. For Normal or Account logon types, its password-storage setting determines whether the client saves the password or asks you for it on each connection.
For an anonymous IIS or other FTP server
- Open the Site Manager and select the affected site.
- Set Logon Type to Anonymous.
- Remove any saved username and password fields that could cause the profile to attempt a named login.
- Connect and inspect the message log. An anonymous server should not require a personal password; a
530response means the server-side anonymous configuration, authorization or user-isolation settings still need attention.
For a named account
- Set Logon Type to Normal when the server expects a username and password, or to Account only when the server specifically requires an account value in addition to the password.
- Enter the exact username format required by the server’s local or domain configuration.
- Enter the current password and save it only if the computer and profile are trusted for stored credentials.
- If FileZilla asks every time, inspect its password-storage preference and the selected logon type. A prompt can be expected behavior when saving is disabled; it is not proof that the server rejected the password.
- If the prompt returns after you submit a password, read the response code. A server-side
530requires account, authorization or mode troubleshooting; a local prompt before any connection attempt points to the client profile.
Do not use a saved password to conceal a mode mismatch. First make one successful connection with the correct mode, then decide whether storing the credential is appropriate.
Protect credentials with FTPS or SSL
Plain FTP does not protect login credentials in transit. Microsoft warns: “Due to the design of File Transfer Protocol (FTP), user names and passwords are transmitted over FTP in plain text, making them vulnerable to network discovery.” Anyone able to observe an untrusted network path may be able to recover those credentials.

| Connection choice | Credential confidentiality | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|
| FTP without TLS | Username and password travel in plain text | Suitable only where the entire path is trusted and the exposure is explicitly accepted; it is a poor choice for named credentials across shared or untrusted networks |
| FTPS/SSL | TLS protects the control connection’s credentials when correctly configured | Requires a server certificate and a client that verifies or accepts the intended certificate; firewall and passive-port settings still apply |
Microsoft recommends using Basic authentication only when the connection is secured with SSL. Enable FTPS on the server, configure the client to require the intended encryption level, and verify the certificate rather than blindly accepting an unexpected one. Encryption solves credential exposure; it does not grant authorization or repair an invalid account.
Diagnose passive mode only after login works
Passive FTP uses a server-selected data port that the client must reach for directory listings and transfers. A firewall, NAT device or cloud security group can block that port even when the control connection and password exchange are successful. The log commonly shows 227 Entering Passive Mode before a timeout or failed listing.
Use a fixed passive-port range
- Choose a defined range of passive data ports appropriate for the number of simultaneous transfers your server must support.
- Configure the FTP server’s passive-mode settings to use that range. FileZilla Server exposes this under its FTP/FTPS passive-mode settings.
- Permit the same range through the server’s host firewall.
- If the server is behind NAT, forward the range to the FTP host and configure the externally reachable address that passive responses advertise.
- On a cloud host, allow the range in the instance’s security group or equivalent network policy.
- Retry a directory listing and a small transfer. If login succeeds but these operations fail, continue investigating the data path rather than changing the password.
Keep authentication and passive-mode tests separate. First obtain a completed login and a server response confirming it. Then test listing, download and upload while watching for the passive port and timeout. This prevents a data-channel problem from sending you back to an already-correct credential configuration.

Self-managed server or managed FTP service?
The troubleshooting boundary depends on who operates the server. On a self-managed IIS or FileZilla Server installation, you control every layer. A managed service may hide some settings, but its support team must still know whether the failure is authentication, authorization or the data channel.
| Responsibility | Self-managed server | Managed hosting |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication mode and account lifecycle | You select Anonymous or Basic, create or disable accounts and maintain passwords | The provider exposes the available modes and usually manages the underlying account system |
| FTP authorization and directory permissions | You maintain site rules and Windows filesystem rights | The provider applies account-to-folder mappings; request the exact authorization and path details |
| TLS certificates | You install, renew and verify the certificate and client policy | The provider may manage certificates, but you still need the correct FTPS endpoint and verification behavior |
| Firewall, NAT and passive ports | You configure the fixed range, host firewall, NAT and cloud security group | The provider controls network policy; give support the 227 response and timeout details |
When escalating to a provider, include the client log, the timestamp, the selected login type, the server response code and whether the failure occurs before or after 227 Entering Passive Mode. Do not send a password in a support ticket.

530and repeated login attempts as authentication or authorization work; treat227followed by a timeout as data-channel work. - Write down the intended identity. Decide whether this site is anonymous or named-user access before changing any client field.
- Align IIS. In FTP Authentication, enable the intended mode. In FTP Authorization Rules, allow the matching identity and required operations.
- Remove unsupported combinations. Do not combine IIS anonymous access with Active Directory User Isolation.
- Verify the physical path. Check Windows permissions on the exact directory involved, including inherited denies and nested-folder differences.
- Align the client. In FileZilla, use Anonymous for anonymous access; use Normal or Account for the server’s named-login requirement and review password storage.
- Secure named logins. Use FTPS/SSL, particularly with Basic authentication, and verify the certificate presented by the server.
- Test operations independently. Confirm login, then listing, download and upload. Record the first operation that fails.
- Fix passive networking if needed. Configure a fixed range and permit it through the host firewall, NAT and cloud security group only when the log shows a post-login data-channel failure.
Common wrong turns
- Entering the password repeatedly: this cannot make an Anonymous server accept a named credential or make an unauthorized account access a folder.
- Changing passive ports after a
530: passive ports carry data after login; they do not authenticate the user. - Granting broad filesystem rights: a wide permission grant can mask the real mismatch and creates unnecessary exposure. Match the account, path and operation instead.
- Assuming a successful login proves access: FTP Authorization Rules and Windows permissions remain separate checks.
- Using plain FTP for convenience: the credentials remain visible on the network. Move named logins to FTPS/SSL instead.
- Blaming FileZilla for every prompt: a prompt caused by disabled password storage is a client preference; a prompt after a server
530is a server-side rejection.
When the prompt is fixed
A successful repair has a specific, observable result: the client uses the login type that the server is configured to accept, the server authorizes that identity for the requested path, and the underlying directory permissions allow the operation. The log then shows a completed login; any later failure can be investigated as a listing or transfer problem without returning to the password dialog.
