The wingless Radical Highway Challenge Acts are the strongest candidates for the hardest challenges to S-rank in Sonic X Shadow Generations. The ranking focuses on precision-heavy S-rank attempts, not simply clearing each act. It covers the base game; the optional Movie Pack Challenge Acts are excluded.
How this ranking weighs difficulty
A tough first clear and a tough S-rank are not the same thing. The ranking below considers the skill an act tests, the constraint it imposes, and whether the target is merely finishing or earning a high rank. The game awards ranks based on score and performance, and its records include best score, time, and rank for relevant acts. Challenge Acts are distinct from the main stage acts. In Sonic’s stages, gates appear as progression advances, with five challenges per stage split between ACT 1 and ACT 2. Clearing a Challenge Act and collecting three Boss Gate Keys opens a boss gate. Shadow’s Challenge Gates also have ACT 1 and ACT 2, and a Challenge Act can yield a Boss Gate Key; his stage progression additionally involves collecting Doom’s Gear to unlock locations. Those systems provide context, but the available official material does not rank individual challenges by difficulty.
Hardest challenges to S-rank
1. Wingless Radical Highway Challenge Acts
These are the clearest picks for the top of the list because removing a power changes how the route can be executed, making movement and precision more demanding. One player who reported S-ranking Shadow Generations singled out wingless Radical Highway Act 2; another discussion called the wingless Act 1 S-rank exceptionally demanding. Those reports are anecdotal, not measurements, but together they make the wingless Radical Highway challenges the best-supported candidates for the toughest S-rank targets.

Expect the restriction to matter most when chasing a rank: a route that is manageable on a basic clear can become much less forgiving when movement options are limited and performance matters.
2. The hard-mode challenge northwest of Kingdom Valley
A player identified the hard-mode hub challenge northwest of Kingdom Valley as especially difficult to S-rank. This is a hard-mode target, not a standard story challenge, so it belongs near the top for players attempting the stricter version. The placement reflects one player’s assessment; it should not be read as a universal verdict.

3. Other restrictive S-rank Challenge Acts
Beyond those named examples, the most plausible contenders are acts whose objectives demand unusually precise routing, constrained movement, or careful resource use. SEGA’s manual confirms the Challenge Act mode and ranking mechanics, but does not supply an objective-by-objective difficulty table or enough detail to rank further acts responsibly. Check the objective and conditions shown in your game before comparing a specific act; there is no substantiated exhaustive ordering here.

- If you want to clear everything: treat the list as a pointer to challenges likely to require more attention, not as a progression order or a claim that ordinary clears are equally difficult.
- If you are chasing S-ranks: compare the act’s specific constraint and route demands, then use the in-game records to track your own score, time, and rank.
