Hardest Final Bosses of All Time: 10 Brutal Fights, Ranked

Isshin is one defensible pick for gaming’s hardest final boss, but the answer depends on genre, player options and whether DLC or optional encounters count.

There is no objective winner for the hardest final boss in gaming: a duel, a bullet-hell encounter and a monster hunt test different skills, and some games let players level up or call for help. But if one pick is needed, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’s Isshin, the Sword Saint is a defensible choice. WatchMojo placed him first in its century-to-date countdown of especially difficult final bosses. The list is an editorial ranking, not a universal measurement.

Here, “final boss” includes base-game finales as well as DLC endings, optional routes and post-game capstones. Those categories are marked below because they are not interchangeable.

What makes a final boss difficult?

A useful comparison looks beyond how many attempts a fight takes. It asks what the encounter demands, how it punishes errors and how much freedom the game gives the player to prepare or seek help. These factors make a ranking easier to understand without pretending difficulty has a universal unit.

  • Speed and readability: Are attacks legible, and how much time is there to react?
  • Phases: Does the boss change its patterns or demands as the fight progresses?
  • Error cost: Can one mistake be recovered from, or does it erase a long stretch of progress?
  • Skill check: Does the encounter require mastery of mechanics taught throughout the game?
  • Player options: Can you change your build, gain levels, summon help or leave and return later?
  • Status: Is the fight required to finish the main story, or is it an optional route, DLC finale or post-game challenge?

These distinctions matter especially when comparing games from different genres. A fight can be punishing because it demands precise defense, because it overwhelms the player with projectiles, or because it tests preparation and execution over a long hunt.

10 notoriously difficult final-boss encounters

This is a cross-genre shortlist, not a claim that every player would rank these fights in the same order. The encounters below are drawn from WatchMojo’s century-to-date list, which includes story finales alongside optional, DLC and post-game fights.

1. Isshin, the Sword Saint — Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (base-game finale)

Isshin is WatchMojo’s number-one pick. The duel asks players to apply the game’s core combat lessons under sustained pressure: read attacks, respond decisively and keep control through a multi-stage confrontation. Unlike games that let players solve a wall by changing builds or returning at a higher level, Sekiro centers the test on execution of its combat system.

2. Promised Consort Radahn — Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree (DLC finale)

This is the capstone of the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion, not the required final boss of the base game. Its inclusion illustrates why a list needs to label its scope: a player might reasonably count DLC finales as final bosses, while another might mean only the main campaign’s ending.

3. Sans — Undertale (optional route)

Sans appears on the genocide route, so this is not the standard required ending encounter. The fight is a sharp departure from a conventional action duel: it challenges the player through an RPG battle built around avoiding attacks and surviving repeated pressure.

4. Absolute Radiance — Hollow Knight (optional Godmaster content)

Absolute Radiance is associated with the game’s Godmaster content rather than its ordinary required campaign finale. It belongs in a broad hardest-final-boss discussion as an optional endgame challenge, but should not be mistaken for a mandatory story-ending fight.

5. Orphan of Kos — Bloodborne: The Old Hunters (DLC)

Orphan of Kos is the climactic challenge of The Old Hunters expansion. As with Radahn, its difficulty and status should be compared as DLC content rather than folded silently into a list of base-game finales.

6. Vergil — Devil May Cry 3 (final-boss encounter)

Vergil represents the high-pressure action-duel end of the spectrum. The fight rewards close attention to attack timing and openings, and it asks the player to respond within the game’s fast, technical combat language.

7. Erlang — Black Myth: Wukong (optional/post-game challenge)

Erlang is included among the list’s hardest encounters, but it is not equivalent in status to a required base-game ending. Players should treat it as an optional endgame challenge when comparing it with mandatory finales.

8. Senator Armstrong — Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (story finale)

Armstrong closes the main story with an encounter built around the game’s distinctive action mechanics. Its place on the list reflects a different kind of test from a Soulslike duel: the player must understand and execute the combat conventions specific to Revengeance.

9. Necron — Final Fantasy IX (story finale)

Necron is a traditional RPG finale, so the preparation and party-management context differs from a one-on-one action fight. That genre distinction is important: difficulty can come from managing resources and building a capable party as well as reacting to moment-to-moment attacks.

10. Primordial Malzeno — Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak (endgame/DLC capstone)

Primordial Malzeno is an endgame challenge from the Sunbreak expansion, not a standard base-game story finale. A monster hunt tests preparation and sustained execution in ways that are difficult to compare directly with a duel or turn-based RPG boss.

Why player choice changes the ranking

Difficulty is partly a property of the encounter and partly a product of the options around it. In a PlayStation Blog interview, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki said the studio does not aim to make games hard for its own sake; he described the intended challenge as studying what happens, learning patterns and improving through mistakes. For Elden Ring, he also described the freedom to leave an impasse, return later and use different approaches. That was a pre-release design expectation, not a verified completion statistic.

As a result, a strict “duel-only” ranking would need to say whether it excludes summons, leveling and other assistance. A ranking that allows each game’s intended options is answering a different question. Neither approach is inherently wrong; the key is to avoid treating them as identical tests.

What completion rates can—and cannot—tell us

In a November 29, 2023 article, AUTOMATON WEST examined PlayStation trophy acquisition across Demon’s Souls, the Dark Souls games, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring. Its figures offer context about progression, but they do not establish an all-time final-boss ranking. The sample is limited to those games and a platform proxy; completion and withdrawal rates can reflect obstacles before a boss, game age, open progression and player differences as well as the boss itself.

  • Demon’s Souls: The article reports that about 24% of players withdrew before clearing Phalanx, the first boss. It reports a 42.4% clear rate for Old King Allant, described as the game’s “de facto” final boss.
  • Dark Souls: The article estimates a 30%–32% last-boss clear rate from ending-trophy acquisition and preceding Four Kings rates. This is an inference, not a directly observed boss-specific trophy figure.
  • Bloodborne: Father Gascoigne, a mandatory early boss rather than a finale, was associated with an estimated withdrawal rate above 55% among the seven games analyzed. Abandonment cannot be attributed to the boss alone.
  • Elden Ring: The article reports a 31.2% clear rate for optional boss Malenia, Blade of Miquella. That figure does not establish the difficulty of an Elden Ring final boss or rank it against other games’ finales.

The figures are reported or estimated rates from that 2023 analysis, not results from a controlled experiment or a cross-publisher survey. Trophy data can show where players stop; by itself, it cannot explain why.

How developers describe a hard fight

Developer commentary can make the demands of a particular encounter clearer without proving that it is objectively among gaming’s hardest. In a PlayStation Studio feature, Firesprite Senior QA Tester Dzan Wong described the surprise of facing Ornstein and Smough together in Dark Souls, then emphasized how the fight changes when one is defeated and the other transforms. Firesprite Embedded QA Analyst Duncan Tyrer highlighted the pressure of handling both enemies at once and adapting through repeated attempts.

In the same feature, Firesprite Game Designer Matthew Kemp described Artorias’s moves as unpredictable and called the fight “merciless.” Bluepoint Games Producer Randall Lowe characterized the Dancer of the Boreal Valley encounter in Dark Souls III as a “dance between two forces trying to dominate one another.” These are informed reactions to specific fights, not a standardized measurement against every final boss.

So, what game has the hardest final boss?

If the question calls for one answer, Isshin, the Sword Saint is a strong editorial pick: WatchMojo ranked him first in its century-to-date countdown, and the encounter is a concentrated test of Sekiro’s combat. But that answer depends on what counts as a final boss and what forms of player assistance are allowed. Radahn and Orphan of Kos are DLC finales, Sans is tied to an optional route, and Absolute Radiance and Erlang belong to optional or endgame challenges. The fairest answer is therefore a qualified one, not a universal verdict.

For a personal comparison, ask: Which final boss took you the longest to beat? Then note whether it was mandatory, whether you could change your build or get help, and what the fight asked you to master. Those details make the answer more meaningful than a bare ranking.
