Without training, wearing heavy armor gives disadvantage on Strength- or Dexterity-based D20 tests and prevents spellcasting. Training does not remove an armor’s separate Strength requirement.
What does heavy armor training do?
Armor training is a rules capability for an armor category, not a separate exercise or conditioning system. The 2024 Rules Glossary states: “If you wear Light, Medium, or Heavy armor and lack training with it, you have Disadvantage on any D20 Test that involves Strength or Dexterity, and you can’t cast spells.” Read the Armor Training rule in the D&D 2024 Basic Rules.
Shield training is separate from armor training. A character without shield training does not gain a shield’s Armor Class benefit.
Which classes get heavy armor training?
In the cited D&D 2024 Basic Rules class entries, Fighters and Paladins have training with light, medium, and heavy armor and shields. Barbarians have training with light and medium armor and shields, but not heavy armor in that class entry. See the Basic Rules character classes.

These are the training listed in those class entries; class is not necessarily the only source available to a character. Check the character’s actual features and other options before deciding whether they are trained.
Which armor counts as heavy armor?
The D&D 2024 equipment table lists four heavy armor types. Their game statistics show different tradeoffs in protection, Strength threshold, weight, cost, stealth, and time to put on or remove. See the Basic Rules equipment table.

The listed heavy armor donning time is 10 minutes; doffing takes 5 minutes. These are game rules values, not real-world armor measurements or training advice.
Can you wear heavy armor without training?
The rules describe the consequences rather than a blanket ban: wearing heavy armor without training imposes disadvantage on D20 tests involving Strength or Dexterity and prevents spellcasting. This can affect a character even if the armor otherwise appears usable, so check training before equipping it.

Does heavy armor training remove the Strength requirement?
No. Training and the armor’s listed Strength score are separate rules. If an armor entry lists a Strength score and the wearer is below it, the wearer’s speed is reduced by 10 feet. Ring mail lists no Strength score; chain mail lists Strength 13; splint and plate list Strength 15. Training does not cancel that speed reduction.
