There is no public confirmation that Sony has fixed a widespread PS5 “bricking” defect. Sony released later system software, but its published notes do not identify a dedicated repair for consoles stuck in Safe Mode, failing to boot, or losing access to games after an update. Those problems have been reported by owners, but the reports do not establish that one firmware version caused them all.
What happened, and which updates are involved?
Owners have reported PS5s getting stuck in Safe Mode, failing to boot, showing a black screen, or having games disappear after recent system-software updates. Those reports establish that people experienced serious problems; they do not prove a single update caused them or establish how widespread the failures are. Some posts point to other possible causes, including storage trouble, network interruptions, and hardware connections.
One report involving error SU-101312-8 initially blamed an update but later identified a loose disc-drive connection. That is an individual account, not a diagnosis that explains other cases, but it illustrates why a failure that follows an update is not proof that the update caused it. Read the owner report.
What do the later PS5 updates say?
| Version and release date | Published description | Does it confirm a bricking fix? |
|---|---|---|
| 26.04-13.42.00 — July 1, 2026 | Improved system-software performance and stability. Game Watch coverage | No. Sony did not publicly identify this as a fix for boot failures or consoles becoming unusable. |
| 26.05-13.60.00 — July 23, 2026 | Improved messages and usability on some screens. PlayStation LifeStyle coverage | No. The published description does not mention boot failures, storage corruption, or Safe Mode loops. |
Sony’s PS5 system-software page provides update and recovery instructions. As of August 16, 2026, no public Sony statement identified in the available material says version 26.04-13.42.00 bricked consoles, that Sony recalled it, or that version 26.05-13.60.00 specifically fixes the reported failures. This means no public acknowledgment was found; it does not establish what Sony may know from individual support cases.

Does a later update count as a fix?
Not on the published evidence. A general stability update could address software problems, but without a specific Sony statement or independently verified recovery evidence, it cannot be called a confirmed fix for the alleged bricking issue. The July 23 notes describe screen messages and usability, not recovery from boot or storage failures.
Some owners describe recovery after retrying an update, using USB recovery, rebuilding a database, reconnecting hardware, or resolving network or storage problems. These are individual outcomes, not controlled evidence that a firmware release fixed a common defect. Reports of missing games likewise do not establish that the games were deleted; storage indexing, library synchronization, or database issues may be involved. Is it safe to install a PS5 update?
Sony continues to direct owners to use current system software, but no update can be described as risk-free based on the information available here. Sony warns against unofficial update files and methods, and says not to install immediately before or after a power outage. Interrupting an installation can damage the system. A routine update is also different from a system-software reinstallation, which deletes console data.
- Use a stable internet connection; a wired connection can reduce network interruptions.
- Do not switch networks or unplug the console during download or installation.
- Avoid starting an update when power is unstable or an outage is expected.
- Back up saved data before recovery or reset steps, especially before a reinstallation.
Check your version and try the least destructive recovery first
Check the installed version
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then System Software.
- Select Console Information to see the installed system-software version. For update controls, use System Software Update and Settings.
Retry a failed download
- Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system-software update and select View Error Info.
- Select Try Again. This is a less destructive first step than reinstalling system software.
If Sony’s service status shows a disruption, check again after service is restored before treating a failed download as a console fault: PlayStation Network Service Status.

Install the update from USB
For Sony’s USB update procedure, use a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, with about 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. Create the folders and filename exactly as shown:
- Create a folder named
PS5at the USB drive’s top level, then a folder namedUPDATEinside it. - Download the update file from Sony’s official PS5 system-software page and save it in the UPDATE folder as
PS5UPDATE.PUP. - Turn off the PS5 and connect the USB drive.
- Hold the console’s power button until the second beep to start Safe Mode.
- Select Update System Software, then Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
Follow Sony’s instructions for the current file and procedure; do not use files from unofficial sources.

Reinstall only as a last-resort software step
Sony’s reinstallation procedure requires the separate reinstallation file, not the ordinary update file. It deletes all data on the console, so do not treat it as a routine update retry. If you choose this route, prepare PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP using the reinstallation file, start Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep, then select Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Read Sony’s current instructions before proceeding: PS5 system-software update and reinstallation.
Is your PS5 actually bricked?
“Bricked” suggests a console is permanently unusable. A PS5 that can display Safe Mode is not necessarily permanently dead: Sony provides update and reinstall options there. A failed download or Safe Mode loop may be recoverable, while a console with no video and no accessible Safe Mode may need hardware service.

- Games appear to be missing: check library and storage availability before concluding that data was erased.
- Black screen, but Safe Mode works: check the HDMI cable and display, as well as the system software.
- No picture and no Safe Mode: try a known-good HDMI cable and display; if the console remains inaccessible, hardware service may be needed.
- Repeated errors or shutdowns: stop repeating recovery attempts if the console becomes unresponsive or shows signs of a power, heat, storage, or physical fault.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Contact Sony if Safe Mode will not appear after checking the display connection, online and USB updates repeatedly fail, the same error keeps returning, or the console remains unusable after a successful reinstallation. A successful reinstall followed by continued failure can point beyond a simple update problem. Use PlayStation Support or PlayStation Repairs for current guidance and a repair quote.
No universal free out-of-warranty repair policy for consoles allegedly affected by this update is established. Before contacting support, record:
- Console model and serial number, installed firmware version, and update date and time.
- Error codes and a photo or video showing the failure.
- Whether Safe Mode works and which recovery steps you tried.
- Proof of purchase and warranty status.
- Any prior repair, storage upgrade, cleaning, or hardware modification.
Those details can help support distinguish a software failure from a storage, drive, power, or other hardware problem. Sony’s official software instructions also warn that unofficial update methods or a modified system can affect warranty or repair eligibility.
