Yes. Sony said the PlayStation 5 had passed 50 million units sold to consumers by December 9, 2023. That is a historical consumer-sales milestone, not Sony’s current total.
What Sony’s 50 million figure measures
Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the milestone on December 20, 2023, and its announcement dates the total to December 9. The figure refers to PS5 consoles sold through to consumers—not units shipped by Sony to retailers. Sony described the achievement as arriving three years after the console launched in November 2020. Why Sony’s newer total is different
Sony’s business-data page reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold-in worldwide as of June 30, 2026. “Sold-in” counts hardware sold by Sony into retail channels; it is not the same measure as consumer purchases. Because the figures use different definitions, dates, and sales stages, the 95 million figure should not be presented as a newer consumer-sales total or treated as a direct update to the 50 million milestone. | Figure | What it counts | Date covered |
|---|---|---|
| More than 50 million | PS5 units sold through to consumers | December 9, 2023 |

What Sony said about the milestone
Sony cited popular game releases and the launch of PS5 cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members as context for strong momentum. The announcement did not quantify how much either factor contributed to sales. Jim Ryan, then president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the milestone reflected support from the global PlayStation community and enthusiasm for games made by PlayStation Studios and its partners.
