Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf Sonic X Shadow Generations crashes on Steam Deck, first identify which part fails and whether your Deck runs SteamOS with Proton or Windows. Players have reported different problems—including crashes in Sonic Generations, crashes in Shadow Generations, and a crash when opening Shadow’s options menu—so no single fix is established. Start with reversible checks; treat community file and DLL changes as experiments, not guaranteed solutions.
Identify the crash before changing anything
Note the operating system, the game section that fails, and when the crash happens. This matters because the available reports describe different configurations and symptoms rather than one confirmed shared cause.
- Operating system: SteamOS with Proton, or Windows installed on the Deck?
- Game section: Sonic Generations or Shadow Generations?
- Failure point: launch, a menu, or a particular point in gameplay?
- Changes in use: mods, overclocking, or a forced Proton version?
A Steam Community thread started October 26, 2024 describes a Deck running Windows 11 where Shadow Generations crashed on launch. After the player moved the installation from an SD card to internal storage, it later crashed during gameplay; that sequence does not show that storage caused the crash or that changing storage fixes it. Read the Windows 11 report.
Other reports concern crashes when selecting Sonic Generations or opening Shadow’s options menu. Valve’s Proton compatibility issue #8185 includes both a Linux/Proton report of the options-menu crash and a separate report that the game and menu worked on a Steam Deck. Those differing outcomes are not a current compatibility guarantee. See the Proton issue.

- Remove modifications temporarily. Disable game mods and overclocking while troubleshooting. A Steam Community poster reproduced a Sega Support response recommending this and checking for the latest firmware. This is support guidance relayed by a player, not a directly verified Sega help page. See the player-relayed support reply.
- Install available Steam Deck updates. Steam’s general Deck troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the system when addressing instability. This is general device advice, not a diagnosis or a game-specific fix. Read Steam’s software troubleshooting guidance.
- Restart the Deck after updates or removing modifications, then test the same game section and failure point again.
If Sonic Generations crashes, test reversible settings
A Steam discussion started February 19, 2025 describes crashes when selecting the Sonic Generations side. Players reported mixed results after restoring Shadow-side settings to their defaults or adjusting Shadow’s display resolution and other settings. Some said the changes helped; others said a suggested reset did not work. Read the Sonic-side crash discussion.
- Record the current Shadow-side display and graphics settings so you can restore them.
- Try resetting Shadow-side settings to their defaults, then test Sonic Generations.
- If it still crashes, test a lower resolution or lower settings; some players also reported trying windowed mode.
- Change one setting at a time and revert changes that do not help.
These are community-reported experiments, not established fixes. The discussion also mentions editing screen_setting.xml to change the fullscreen state, but results varied. Back up the file before editing it, and skip this step if you are not comfortable changing game files.

Manual DXVK DLL replacement
In the Windows 11 discussion, a player suggested putting DXVK 2.4.1’s d3d11.dll and dxgi.dll in the game folder. Some commenters reported success, while another reported a conflict with a mod manager. This is a dated community workaround, not an official or universal fix. Avoid it if you rely on a mod manager, and preserve the original files so you can undo the change. See the DXVK suggestion and replies.
Changing storage or Proton versions
The cited reports do not establish that moving the game between an SD card and internal storage, reinstalling it, or changing Proton versions resolves these crashes. The Windows report describes a later crash after a move to internal storage, not proof that storage had no influence or that another storage change would help.

When to escalate
If the crash persists after updates, a restart, and any relevant reversible settings tests, use Steam’s troubleshooting and support options. When describing the problem, include your Deck operating system, the game section, where the crash occurs, and whether mods, overclocking, or a forced Proton version are involved. This makes it clearer whether your case resembles the Windows launch/gameplay report, the Sonic-side settings reports, or the Linux/Proton options-menu issue.
Quick Recap

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
