As of October 8, 2026, Valve’s Steam Store still lists the Index headset, kits, controllers, base stations and replacement parts, though stock differs by item and by region. Steam Frame, which Valve announced in November 2025, is a separate product that Valve’s own engineers describe as a new direction rather than a direct Index successor. Whether the Index is still being built or supported is not something Valve has stated publicly.
What Valve has and has not said
There is no Valve statement, in the sources reviewed for this article, that ends production, sales or support for the Index. The evidence is limited to the store listing and to interview comments from Valve staff. A listing that is still live is not a manufacturing announcement, and a sold-out listing is not a discontinuation notice. Both can change without notice.

Readers who saw the headline and assumed an official end-of-life notice should know that the claim rests on inference. Valve’s public pages describe the Index as a current product, and the store is the only primary source that shows its status.

What Valve’s Index store shows
Valve’s Index store page lists the following items. The U.S. and EU storefronts displayed different stock states, so check the page for your own country before deciding anything.
#1 Best Overall
| Listing | U.S. price shown | U.S. stock state (checked October 8, 2026) | Regional page (EU, checked October 8, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Valve Index VR Kit | $999 | Out of stock | Out of stock |
| Index Headset + Controllers | $749 | Out of stock | Stock state mixed; see note below |
| Index Headset (headset only) | $499 | Add to Cart available | Available to order |
| Index Controllers, Base Station, replacement left and right controllers, face gasket, replacement tether | Not stated in this snapshot | Not stated in this snapshot | Some parts available to order; others out of stock |
The EU page is shown in euros, and its availability was not uniform across items. These are dated, location-specific observations. They do not show whether Valve is manufacturing new units or planning future supply.
What Steam Frame is
Valve announced Steam Frame in November 2025 alongside the Steam Controller and Steam Machine. Its product page describes a wireless VR headset that plays Steam games through streaming from a PC and as a standalone device. The listed specifications, as shown on Valve’s page on October 8, 2026, are:
- Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor
- 16 GB unified LPDDR5X memory
- 256 GB or 1 TB storage options
- microSD expansion
- Rechargeable 21.6 Wh battery
- A Steam Frame Standalone Verified program for games that run on the device
Specifications and purchasing status can change, so confirm them on Valve’s current product page before publishing or buying. The sources used for this article do not establish whether Frame is shipping in your country or what its price is outside the listing as checked.

What Valve has said about the name change
In an interview reported by PC Gamer’s Jacob Ridley on November 12, 2025, Valve engineer Jeremy Selan said the product was renamed because the team wanted to do something new:
“This is a new product. That’s one of the reasons we changed the name from Valve index to Steam Frame, because we’re trying to do something new with this.”
Selan also said the team was trying to make the device feel like another way to play games in a library rather than a headset with fixed expectations: “We’re really trying to blur the lines from your catalogue, where you just think about, you have your games, this is another device that lets you enjoy them.”

- HEADSET ONLY. (MAY NOT INCLUDE HEAD STRAP ADJUSTMENT PAD). Controllers and base station purchased seperately
- 5x IMPROVEMENT over first-generation PC VR HMDs.
Gabe Rowe, another Valve engineer, addressed the Index directly in the same coverage: “This is not us saying, ‘Hey, we don’t like the Index’.” These are quotes from a secondary report of the interview, not from a Valve transcript, and they describe intent rather than a formal product decision about the Index.
Index and Steam Frame are not one-for-one replacements
PC Gamer’s interview coverage describes the Index as a PC accessory and Steam Frame as a computer with its own Arm processor and SteamOS. The practical differences are larger than the name change suggests.
| Factor | Valve Index | Steam Frame |
|---|---|---|
| Valve’s described role | PC VR headset; the kit requires a PC | Wireless headset for streaming from a PC and standalone play |
| Needs a PC to run games | Yes, per Valve’s store text | Not required for standalone games; PC streaming is one of two described modes |
| Tracking | Base stations required for the headset-only listing, per Valve’s store | Not established in the Frame summary used here; check Valve’s current page |
| Controllers and accessories | Index controllers and replacement parts listed by Valve | Valve labels selected accessories as tested compatible; Index parts are not stated as compatible |
| Price | U.S. listing prices shown above | Not stated in the Frame listing as checked October 8, 2026 |
Because of these differences, calling Steam Frame an Index upgrade would overstate what the evidence supports. It depends on whether you want a PC-tethered headset or a wireless one that runs games on its own.

If you want an Index today
The right path depends on what you already own and what is still orderable where you live.
Buying new
- Open the Index store page in the Steam Store and select your country from the storefront region setting.
- Check each item’s stock state before assuming a kit is available. In the October 8, 2026 snapshot, the U.S. kit and headset-plus-controllers were out of stock while the headset-only option could be added to cart.
- If you need base stations, confirm they are in stock as separate listings. A headset-only purchase requires base stations and a PC, according to Valve’s store text.
Buying used
Used Index units are sold outside Valve’s store, so the Steam Store listing does not tell you about their condition or completeness. Before paying, confirm the headset, both controllers, base stations, power supplies and the tether are included, and that the units match the variant you need.
Repairing or replacing parts
Valve’s store lists replacement parts for the Index, including left and right controllers, a face gasket and a replacement tether. Parts availability varied by region in the snapshot above. If a listed part is out of stock in your country, a third-party marketplace may offer it, but verify the seller and the part number before buying, since the store listing does not establish marketplace stock, seller legitimacy or price.
Choosing Steam Frame instead
Steam Frame makes sense if you want a wireless headset that can run games on its own or stream from a PC, and if you are not tied to Index base stations or controllers. Confirm whether Frame is available to order in your country and what it costs there before switching plans, because the sources used here do not establish that outside the listing as checked.
