Sigil is now scheduled to shut down on October 31, 2026, and Wizards says content made in the app will become inaccessible.
What happened to the Sigil VTT?
Sigil was Wizards of the Coast’s immersive 3D virtual tabletop for Dungeons & Dragons, built with Unreal Engine 5. Players could create 3D dungeons, environments and maps. It entered early access on February 28, 2025. On March 18, reports said Wizards of the Coast had laid off the team working on it.
Rascal News reported that 30 Wizards employees on Sigil were laid off and that contractors were not included in that number. On the same day, former project design lead Andy Collins described the cuts as approximately 30 developers, or 90% of the team. Engadget also reproduced Collins’s statement. Rascal also reported that a smaller crew would fold existing Sigil features into D&D Beyond, citing a screenshot of an internal staff message. That was contemporaneous reporting, not a later official commitment to transfer Sigil itself or its users’ creations.

Why did Hasbro lay off the Sigil team?
Wizards’ current sunset FAQ says it could not sustain the ongoing support or quality it believed players deserved. The company says it wants to focus on future digital D&D experiences informed by Sigil and player feedback. Wizards of the Coast’s Sigil sunset FAQ
In a 2026 interview with GamesRadar, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks offered a more technical explanation: he said Sigil’s system requirements were too high and its design struggled with many objects unless a player had a very powerful gaming PC. He said Sigil’s immersive world-building was a strength, while the underlying performance and hardware demands were shortcomings. These are Cocks’s explanations, not published benchmark results.

“What Sigil got right was having this really cool, immersive tableau to be able to create on,” Cocks told GamesRadar.
Cocks said some of Sigil’s ideas would inform Maps, D&D Beyond’s 2D tabletop experience, which he described as browser-based and intended to work on an iPad or lower-end Windows PC. Sigil and D&D Maps: what is the difference?

Wizards’ FAQ also listed recommended Sigil specifications: an Nvidia RTX 2080 or Radeon RX 6600 XT-class GPU with 8 GB VRAM, a Core i5-7300U or Ryzen 3 3300U-class processor, 16 GB RAM and an NVMe SSD. Those are legacy requirements for a service due to close, not a reason to buy or upgrade a PC for Sigil. Official Sigil FAQ and specifications
When does Sigil shut down, and what happens to campaigns and maps?
Wizards says Sigil will remain playable through October 31, 2026. After that, its servers will shut down, and content created in Sigil will no longer be accessible. The FAQ says creations will not be transferred elsewhere. Treat that as an access loss: the official guidance is to save copies of information you want to keep outside the app before the service ends. Wizards’ shutdown and preservation guidance

Preserve the material you want to keep
- Copy important notes and journal entries into a document or another service you control.
- Take screenshots of images or scenes you want to retain; Wizards specifically recommends screenshots.
- Do not assume campaigns, maps, or other Sigil creations will move to D&D Maps or another platform.
What happened to the Master Tier offer?
The six-month complimentary Master Tier offer has expired. It was for users who had accessed Sigil using a paid or trial Master Tier subscription at least once between March 1 and October 23, 2025, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time; the redemption deadline was January 6, 2026. Wizards’ FAQ described a free base experience for anyone with a D&D Beyond account. It included a premade introductory adventure, a starter builder kit, and the ability to join multiplayer games hosted by Master Tier subscribers. Master Tier subscribers could create, host and share multiplayer games and maps, and unlock additional builder kits and customization. These describe the product’s access model, not access after the announced shutdown.
