HBO is developing a Baldur’s Gate series planned as a continuation after Baldur’s Gate 3, not a retelling of the game. Craig Mazin is attached as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner. The project is set in Dungeons & Dragons’ Forgotten Realms, but details such as its cast, timeline, and episode count were not announced in the latest status report available here, dated August 4, 2026.
How the series is expected to connect to Baldur’s Gate 3
The series is reported to pick up after the events of Baldur’s Gate 3 and continue the wider story, rather than adapt the game scene by scene. TheWrap reported the project on February 5, 2026, describing Mazin’s intention to continue the story created by Larian Studios and Wizards of the Coast. PC Gamer, citing Deadline for details, reported that the show is expected to draw mainly on BG3 while also having room to use the broader Forgotten Realms setting. That answers the main question, but it does not reveal which ending—or which choices within the game—will shape the show. The reviewed reports do not establish a specific plot, party lineup, or episode-by-episode connection. Treat those as open questions, not confirmed story details.
Who is making it, and what is Larian’s role?
Mazin is attached to create, write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner. TheWrap also named Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment’s Gabriel Marano as executive producers. Mazin described himself as a devoted D&D fan and praised how Swen Vincke and Larian’s team adapted it. He also said he had spent “nearly 1,000 hours” in Baldur’s Gate 3; that is his own estimate, not an independently audited playtime figure. TheWrap reported Mazin’s statement and the producer credits on February 5, 2026.

Larian CEO and game director Swen Vincke said Mazin contacted the studio to talk. Vincke welcomed the possibility of new adventures growing from the game’s endings, saying, “The endings of BG3 were created so they could serve as narrative soil for new adventures.” But GameSpot also reported Vincke’s qualification that, to his knowledge, no Larian writers were consulting on the HBO production. Contact between Mazin and the studio does not establish Larian as a producer, formal creative partner, or approving authority. GameSpot reported Vincke’s response on February 6, 2026.
What is known about characters and casting?
There is no confirmed cast in the reports covered here. In June 2026, Samantha Béart, who voiced Karlach in BG3, said Mazin had personally told her he believed key game characters should be meaningfully represented on screen, “as someone familiar or someone new.” That relays Mazin’s stated intention; it does not confirm Béart’s return or the casting of any other performer. No viewing requirement has been announced. BG3 is the direct source material behind the reported continuation, so playing it is the clearest way to encounter the story and characters the show may build on. But there is no indication that owning or finishing the game will be necessary to watch the series. Dungeons & Dragons and the Forgotten Realms provide wider setting context; no particular book or sourcebook has been identified as required preparation.
