HBO’s The Last of Us Reaches “The Moment” Game Fans Have Been Dreading

Spoilers for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 2, “Through the Valley,” and The Last of Us Part II. The moment game fans have been dreading is Joel Miller’s death. The HBO episode adapts a defining event from the 2020 game, but the experience depends on whether you already know what is coming.

What is the moment game fans have been dreading?

It is Joel’s death in “Through the Valley,” the second episode of the HBO series’ second season. In The Last of Us Part II, the same event is a turning point that drives Ellie’s response and much of the story that follows.

For players who know the game, the scene can carry the weight of anticipation: they recognize where the story is heading. Viewers who have not played it may meet the moment without that warning. Cinematographer Catherine Goldschmidt described that divide in a TV Guide interview, saying, “We knew that people who played the game would see it coming, but people who didn’t play the game might not. So it might be quite shocking to a lot of people.”

How does the HBO version compare with the game?

The shared story consequence matters more than a claim of exact, beat-for-beat reproduction: Joel’s death sets Ellie’s response in motion in both versions. But the game and the show deliver that story differently. In the game, players act through an interactive experience; the series presents a fixed sequence, with no player control over what the characters choose or do.

  • Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
  • 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.

That difference shapes how viewers encounter the violence and its aftermath. The HBO adaptation has to communicate the story’s relationships and consequences through performance, images, sound and editing rather than through the player’s direct participation. The creators’ adaptation work, discussed by The Atlantic, addresses that challenge of translating a game’s interactive form to television. The game’s broader concerns include vengeance and the way violence begets more violence.

If you want to experience the source story directly, The Last of Us Part II Remastered is the relevant game. The series adapts its story, but that does not mean every scene or detail is identical.

Why does the scene aim for heartbreak, not triumph?

Co-creator Craig Mazin said the intended response to Joel’s hospital rampage was not excitement or approval of his violence. He wanted viewers to feel sadness for Joel and to recognize the damage his actions cause. In a PBS-hosted On Story conversation, Mazin explained that the hospital montage did not feel emotionally right until the team paired it with “All Gone.” He described the intended effect simply: “I just want to feel the heartbreak of it. It’s tragic.”

That perspective makes the sequence more than a shocking death scene. Mazin said it lays seeds of destruction in Joel and Ellie’s relationship; the tragedy sits alongside the harm done by Joel’s choices, rather than asking viewers simply to celebrate or condemn him.

What the episode changes for different viewers

Audience What the moment brings
Players familiar with The Last of Us Part II Recognition and anticipation of a defining event, now presented in the television adaptation.
Viewers new to the story A potentially shocking turn, encountered without prior knowledge of the game’s events.

The HBO episode is therefore both an adaptation of a major game event and a first encounter with it for some of its audience. Knowing the game can change the suspense; it does not make the television version the same experience as playing through the story.
