Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Use an active HDMI-to-analog converter, not a simple cable. A modern console sends digital video and audio through HDMI, while an older television may accept only composite RCA, component, S-video, or SCART. The converter must take HDMI as its input and produce the exact analog format your television accepts.
First identify the sockets on the television, then verify the converter’s labeled signal direction, supported video standard, audio handling, power supply, output modes, and HDCP compatibility. Connector names in a product title are not enough: many “RCA to HDMI” products are designed for an old analog source feeding a newer HDMI screen, which is the opposite of this setup.

Start with the television’s input
Look at the back or side panel and identify the actual video input. Do not choose a converter until you know whether the set has HDMI, composite, component, S-video, or SCART. A socket that looks similar can carry a different signal, and a television may require a particular input mode selected with its remote.

If the television already has HDMI, connect the console directly with an HDMI cable. This avoids unnecessary conversion and preserves whatever resolution, refresh rate, HDR support, and copy-protection compatibility the television and console share. Select the HDMI input on the TV before changing console settings.

Composite RCA input
Composite normally uses one yellow RCA jack for video and red/white RCA jacks for right and left audio. Search for an HDMI to composite AV converter whose diagram explicitly labels HDMI as the input and composite AV as the output. Composite is the lowest-resolution route in this group, and the converter cannot make the TV display modern HDMI features.
Component input
Component video generally uses green, blue, and red video connectors, with separate red/white audio. It is not interchangeable with yellow composite video. A converter must document HDMI input and component output, and its supported component resolution must match what the television accepts. Do not infer compatibility from the presence of RCA plugs alone.
S-video input
S-video carries a different analog video signal from composite. If the TV has only S-video, choose a converter that specifically lists S-video output; a composite-only unit will not become S-video through a passive adapter.
SCART input
SCART is common on European sets and can carry several signal modes. An HDMI-to-SCART converter must specify the video mode and regional standard supported by the television. A SCART plug physically fitting the socket does not prove that the converter is sending the mode the TV expects.

Signal direction: the mistake behind most failed purchases
HDMI is digital. RCA, component, S-video, and SCART are analog interfaces, so connecting a digital console to one of them requires active digital-to-analog conversion. A passive cable cannot perform that conversion.
Read the product diagram rather than relying on a title containing both connector names. “RCA to HDMI” normally means analog RCA input and HDMI output: it is intended to connect an older player or console to a modern HDMI television. For your setup, the labels must say HDMI input and the television’s analog connector as output.
An analog-to-HDMI upscaler is therefore the wrong device even if its plugs appear to match. Likewise, an HDMI/AV selector with several inputs and one HDMI output switches sources; it does not convert HDMI into composite, component, S-video, or SCART.
Which connection path fits your TV?
| Television input | Device category | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI | Direct HDMI cable | TV input selection, cable condition, console output settings, and the TV’s supported resolution and refresh rate. |
| Composite RCA (yellow, red, white) | HDMI-input to composite-AV-output converter | Signal direction, PAL/NTSC support, audio output, power, HDCP compatibility, and the converter’s maximum output mode. |
| Component (green/blue/red video plus audio) | HDMI-input to component-output converter | Exact component format and resolution accepted by the TV; separate audio routing; regional standard; power and HDCP. |
| S-video | HDMI-input to S-video-output converter | Documented S-video output, supported regional standard, audio path, power, and copy-protection behavior. |
| SCART | HDMI-input to SCART-output converter for the TV’s region | Supported SCART video mode, PAL/NTSC or other regional standard, audio, power, and HDCP. |

What conversion changes—and what it cannot do
Resolution and refresh rate
The television and converter establish the usable output. An analog set may accept only a small set of standard-definition modes, regardless of the console’s capabilities. The converter has to generate one of those modes, and the TV must lock onto it. A device advertised as “4K” may describe its HDMI input or an upscaling feature, not a 4K analog output; read the output specification.
Image quality and aspect ratio
Converting digital video to composite, S-video, component, or SCART introduces the limits of that analog connection. Fine text can be less legible, colors can bleed on composite, and a widescreen game may appear stretched or letterboxed. Aspect-ratio controls can exist in the TV, the console, or the converter; change one control at a time so you can tell which device altered the picture.
Latency
Active conversion can add processing delay, but no tested latency figure is established for a particular model here. If timing is important for rhythm, fighting, or competitive games, look for a manufacturer specification or independent measurement for the exact converter rather than assuming all products behave alike.

Some converters extract HDMI audio and provide red/white analog outputs; others require a separate audio connection or support only a limited HDMI audio format. Confirm that the console’s selected audio mode is accepted and that the converter’s analog outputs match the TV’s audio input. If video appears with no sound, check both the console audio setting and the converter’s audio specification.

HDCP and protected output
Copy-protection handshakes can prevent a converter from displaying an otherwise valid signal. Compatibility depends on the console, converter chipset, firmware, and television. A listing that merely says “HDMI compatible” does not establish support for every HDCP version or console mode.
Buying checklist for an HDMI-to-analog converter
- Correct direction: HDMI is explicitly labeled input; the TV connector is explicitly labeled output.
- Exact socket: composite, component, S-video, or SCART output matches the television, including separate audio jacks where required.
- Output modes: the converter lists a resolution and refresh rate the TV can accept.
- Regional standard: PAL, NTSC, or the relevant regional mode is supported by both converter and television.
- Audio: the manual explains how HDMI audio reaches the TV and which formats are accepted.
- Power: check whether the unit uses USB power, a wall adapter, or another supply, and whether that supply is included for your region.
- HDCP: compatibility is stated for the console and output modes you plan to use.
- Controls: switches for output mode or aspect ratio are documented rather than implied by marketing photos.
- Included cables: verify whether the required analog lead and power cable are included; a converter may ship without the cable that fits your TV.
Connection procedure
- Turn off the console and television. Photograph or note the TV’s input labels so you can return to the correct input later.
- Connect the console’s HDMI output to the converter’s HDMI input. Do not use an HDMI output socket on the converter for this step.
- Connect the converter’s analog video output to the matching TV input: yellow for composite, the three color-coded video plugs for component, S-video for S-video, or the documented SCART lead.
- Connect red/white analog audio if the converter provides separate audio output. Component video, in particular, normally needs this separate audio connection.
- Attach the converter’s specified power supply, then power on the TV, converter, and console in that order. Some devices establish the HDMI handshake more reliably when the display is already on.
- Select the TV input connected to the converter. If the converter has an output-mode switch, choose the mode listed as compatible with the television’s regional standard.
- Allow the console to negotiate a supported output. If the screen remains blank, use the console’s safe or low-resolution video-reset procedure from its official support instructions, then select a mode the converter and TV document.
Console-specific notes for PS5
Sony documents PS5 output resolutions including 720p, 1080i, 1080p, and 2160p. The console can use HDMI 2.1 features and up to 4K at 120 Hz when connected to a compatible television or monitor. Sony recommends the included HDMI 2.1 cable, or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, for those high-performance features; older HDMI cables can still be used when the desired mode does not require HDMI 2.1.
Those specifications describe what the PS5 can send over HDMI, not what an analog television or converter can display. A composite, S-video, or SCART path will constrain the result to the converter’s documented analog output. A component path may offer a different set of supported modes, but you must verify both devices rather than assuming the console’s 4K capability carries through.

No picture or “no signal”
- Confirm the TV is on the exact input used by the converter.
- Check that HDMI runs from the console to the converter’s input, not its output.
- Reseat the analog plugs and verify the yellow composite plug is in video, not an audio jack.
- Try another HDMI cable or converter input, then connect the console directly to an HDMI display to isolate the converter.
- Reduce the console output to a mode listed by the converter and TV. Resolution results depend on the display, cable, port, intermediary equipment, firmware, and console settings.
Picture is black and white, rolling, or unstable
This usually indicates a regional-standard or output-mode mismatch, an unsupported resolution, or an incorrect cable path. Check PAL/NTSC selection and the converter’s documented mode. With component, confirm that all three video leads are in their matching green, blue, and red sockets.

Picture but no audio
Verify the red and white audio plugs are connected to the same input group as the video. Check the console’s audio output setting and whether the converter supports that format. Some TVs require audio from a paired input rather than from the video socket alone.
Intermittent image or handshake failures
Power-cycle the TV, converter, and console; try a different HDMI cable or TV HDMI port when testing the console directly; and remove switches or splitters from the chain. If direct HDMI works but the converter does not, HDCP or converter firmware compatibility may be the limiting factor.
Image is stretched, cropped, or delayed
Use the TV’s aspect-ratio control and any documented converter setting, then check the console’s display area. Delay cannot be diagnosed from connector type alone; seek a measured specification for the exact converter if responsiveness is critical.
When a direct HDMI connection is the better answer
If the television has a working HDMI socket, do not buy an analog converter simply to use an older cable. Connect the console directly, select the correct TV input, try another cable or port if necessary, and review the console’s output settings. This route removes an extra conversion stage and gives the TV and console the best chance of negotiating their native capabilities.
For an analog-only television, an appropriately directed converter is the practical bridge, but it is a compromise: the older display determines the available resolution and refresh rate, the analog connection determines much of the picture quality, and the converter determines whether the signal, audio, regional standard, and HDCP handshake are accepted.
