If your PS5 turns on but the TV stays blank, start with the signal path rather than a factory reset. Select the correct HDMI input, reseat the cable, try another TV port or cable, and connect the console directly to the screen. Then power-cycle both devices with their power cables disconnected for 20 minutes. If the picture is still missing, use Safe Mode’s video-output controls. A blank screen limited to 4K/120 Hz needs a separate compatibility check. If none of these steps restores an image, use the official PlayStation Repairs diagnostic instead of guessing at an internal failure.
The sequence below moves from reversible checks to settings changes and finally service escalation. It also explains what each result tells you, so you can stop replacing parts unnecessarily.

First, identify the symptom
This guide applies when the PS5 appears to power on but the connected TV or monitor displays no image, a black screen, or a no-signal message. You may still hear the console or see its power indicator. If the console will not power on at all, this is a different problem from a display-signal failure.
- Keep the PS5 and the TV in the same room while testing so you can change ports and cables without introducing another variable.
- Use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 for the first test. Sony recommends it for the console’s high-performance features, although older HDMI cables can also be used.
- Make one change at a time and check the screen after each change. That makes it possible to identify whether the input, cable, port, intermediary device, or output setting caused the blank picture.
PlayStation’s official picture-and-sound instructions cover the initial connection, direct-connection, power-cycle, firmware, and repair steps described here: PlayStation Support: How to troubleshoot picture and sound issues with your PS5 console.

1. Check the TV input and every part of the HDMI connection
Select the HDMI input that the PS5 actually uses
Use the TV remote’s Input, Source, or HDMI button and select the port number where the PS5 is plugged in. A TV can be on and working normally while showing a different input. If the set has several HDMI entries, check each one that could correspond to the console rather than relying on an automatically selected source.
Reseat both ends of the cable
Turn your attention to the physical connection. Remove the HDMI plug from the PS5 and from the TV, then insert each end fully and squarely. A connector that looks attached can still be loose enough to interrupt the signal. Check that the cable is not being pulled sideways by nearby equipment and that neither HDMI socket contains visible debris or damage.
Try another HDMI port
Move the cable to a different HDMI input on the TV and select that new input manually. This test distinguishes a port-specific problem from a console-wide one. If one port produces a picture while another does not, use the working port for diagnosis and consult the TV manual about the capabilities of the individual inputs.
Substitute a known-good cable
If the included cable is damaged, unusually bent, or produces no picture after the input and port checks, test with another HDMI cable that you already know works with a suitable device. Sony explicitly suggests trying another cable; borrowing one is enough to diagnose the connection, so buying a replacement is not the first requirement. For a setup that must carry 4K at 120 Hz, use the included cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for that mode.
| Test | What you observe | What it narrows down |
|---|---|---|
| Same PS5, another TV input | Picture appears on one input | The original TV port or its settings are implicated; continue testing on the working input. |
| Same input, another HDMI cable | Picture appears with the substitute cable | The original cable or its connectors are the likely interruption. |
| Another input and another cable still show no image | No change | Continue to direct-connection, power-cycle, display-setting, and Safe Mode checks instead of assuming the PS5 is defective. |
These tests are deliberately reversible. Do not erase console data or change multiple output settings while a simple source-selection or connection fault remains possible.

2. Bypass sound bars, receivers, and capture hardware
An audio/video intermediary can prevent the TV from receiving the PS5’s video signal even when the console and TV are individually functional. Sony’s isolation step is to remove those devices temporarily.
- Turn off the PS5 and the TV.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable from any sound bar, home-theater receiver, switch, splitter, or game-capture device in the path.
- Connect the PS5 HDMI output directly to a TV HDMI input with the supplied cable or a known-good substitute.
- Turn on the TV, select the exact input used for the direct connection, and then start the PS5.
- If the picture returns, reconnect the intermediary devices one at a time. The first device whose reintroduction brings back the blank screen is the part of the signal path that needs separate configuration or replacement.
Keep the direct connection in place while you perform the remaining tests. It prevents an unverified receiver or capture device from masking the effect of a PS5 video-output change.

3. Perform Sony’s full power cycle
Standby toggling is not the same as the power-disconnection procedure in Sony’s no-image guidance. Follow the complete sequence:
- Turn the TV or monitor off completely.
- Turn the PS5 off completely. Do not leave either device in rest mode.
- Disconnect the power cable from the display and the power cable from the PS5.
- Wait 20 minutes with both devices disconnected.
- Reconnect the display’s power cable and the PS5’s power cable.
- Turn on the display, choose the PS5’s HDMI input, and then turn on the console.
The 20-minute interval is Sony’s specified wait for this troubleshooting step. If the picture returns after reconnecting power, leave the HDMI path direct and unchanged until you confirm normal operation; then add other equipment back individually.
4. Update the display and check its signal-acceptance settings
A TV may need current firmware or a manufacturer-specific setting before it accepts the resolution and signal the PS5 is sending. Sony advises updating the display firmware and consulting the television manufacturer’s manual for the settings required to accept high-resolution signals.

Use the TV’s own update menu
Open the television’s settings and install any available firmware update according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Menu names differ by brand and model, so use the manual or the support page for the exact path. After the update completes, restart the TV, select the PS5 input again, and check for a picture.

Some displays expose per-port options for enhanced, deep-color, high-bandwidth, or HDMI 2.1 operation. The correct label and location depend on the model. Read the manual before changing a port from its default mode, and make sure you are changing the same HDMI input used by the direct PS5 connection. If the screen works in a standard mode but not an enhanced mode, treat that as a compatibility clue and continue with the 4K/120 Hz branch below.
5. Use Safe Mode to recover a compatible video output
If the cable, input, direct connection, power cycle, and display checks do not restore an image, Safe Mode provides video-output controls without immediately deleting console content.
Enter Safe Mode correctly
- Turn the PS5 off by holding its power button for three seconds. Wait until the console is fully off.
- Press and hold the power button again. Keep holding it until you hear the second beep, approximately seven seconds after the first beep, then release the button.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable. A wireless connection is not sufficient for this Safe Mode prompt.
- Press the controller’s PS button when prompted.
Safe Mode appears as a basic menu. If the TV shows the Safe Mode screen but not the normal PS5 interface, the console can send video and the problem is likely an output setting or compatibility condition rather than a completely absent HDMI signal.
Choose the non-destructive video options first
Open Change Video Output. Sony lists two relevant controls there:

- Change Resolution changes the output resolution to a mode the display may accept. Use it when the console may be sending a resolution the TV cannot display.
- Change HDCP Mode changes the copy-protection handshake mode. Use it when the display path, receiver, or capture hardware is not completing the expected HDCP negotiation.
Apply one option, allow the PS5 to restart, and check the picture before trying the other. If one setting restores the image, leave the intermediary equipment disconnected until you have confirmed stable output, then reconnect devices one at a time.
Do not choose a reset as a first display fix
Safe Mode contains options with very different consequences. Reset PS5 and Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) delete user data. Restore Default Settings does not delete content stored on the console, but it still changes settings you may have customized. For a no-picture symptom, start with Change Resolution and Change HDCP Mode and avoid destructive choices unless the official diagnostic path specifically directs you and you have protected any data you need.

A screen that works at ordinary output but goes blank when 4K/120 Hz is expected has a narrower compatibility problem. Do not apply this checklist merely because the TV is advertised as 4K; use it when the missing picture begins after selecting, enabling, or launching content that should use 4K/120 Hz.

- Verify that the TV model supports 4K at 120 Hz, not just 4K at a lower refresh rate.
- Install the TV’s current firmware.
- Use the HDMI input designated by the manufacturer for HDMI 2.1 or 4K/120 Hz. Ports on the same TV may not have identical capabilities.
- Connect the PS5 directly to that port while testing; remove receivers, sound bars, switches, and capture devices.
Confirm the cable rating
Use the PS5’s included HDMI 2.1 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable explicitly rated for 4K/120 Hz. An older cable may work for a lower-bandwidth picture but fail when the output mode demands more bandwidth. Substitute a cable for diagnosis before purchasing one.

Review PS5 output settings
Once you have a working picture at a lower mode or through Safe Mode, inspect the PS5’s resolution and video-transfer-rate settings. Sony notes that HDMI 2.1 support may require a setting on the TV side and that 4K/120 Hz can have compatibility issues. If lowering the output restores the image, the observation points to a TV-port, firmware, cable, or high-bandwidth setting mismatch rather than proving that the console’s HDMI hardware has failed.
For Sony’s resolution and 4K/120 Hz checklist, use PlayStation Support: How to change PS5 console resolution.
Use the result of each test to choose the next move
| Result | Most useful interpretation | Next move |
|---|---|---|
| The TV shows the PS5 after selecting a different input | The original source selection was wrong. | Label or remember the working HDMI input and continue testing only if the picture fails again. |
| A different cable restores the picture | The first cable or its connector is suspect. | Use the known-good cable; for 4K/120 Hz, ensure its rating matches that mode. |
| A different TV port works | The original port or its configuration is implicated. | Use the working port and consult the TV manual for the non-working port’s capabilities. |
| Direct PS5-to-TV works, but the receiver or capture path does not | An intermediary is interrupting video or HDCP negotiation. | Reconnect devices one at a time and check their compatible input/output settings. |
| The picture appears only in Safe Mode | The console can output video, but the normal resolution or HDCP mode may not be accepted. | Use Change Resolution or Change HDCP Mode; avoid data-erasing resets. |
| Nothing appears, including Safe Mode, after all connection and power checks | The fault cannot be isolated to a simple input, cable, intermediary, or output-setting issue. | Stop changing settings and use PlayStation Repairs for the next diagnostic step. |
These observations narrow the signal path; they do not by themselves confirm a failed HDMI socket, TV board, or other internal component.

When a replacement HDMI cable makes sense
Try another cable when the existing one shows physical damage, when moving the cable changes the symptom, or when a known-good substitute immediately restores the picture. Borrowing a cable is a valid diagnostic test. Older HDMI cables can work for compatible output, so a purchase is not automatically required.
For a problem specifically tied to 4K/120 Hz, choose the included PS5 cable or an Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120 Hz. A new cable cannot correct a wrong TV input, a disabled TV-side HDMI 2.1 setting, an incompatible port, an intermediary device, or a console output mode the display cannot accept.
Escalate through PlayStation Repairs
If the PS5 still produces no image after direct connection, alternate input and cable tests, the 20-minute power cycle, display firmware checks, and Safe Mode video-output changes, use Sony’s PlayStation Repairs diagnostic. The official support pages direct persistent picture problems to that service path.
- Leave the console connected directly to the TV and note which cables, ports, and Safe Mode options you tested.
- Open Sony’s picture-and-sound support page and follow the PlayStation Repairs link for your region.
- Describe whether the TV ever showed the Safe Mode menu, whether another cable or port worked, and whether the failure is limited to 4K/120 Hz.
- Follow the regional diagnostic and service instructions. Repair eligibility, warranty coverage, cost, and turnaround depend on your country and current status, so do not assume any of them before Sony confirms them.
This escalation is preferable to repeatedly resetting the PS5 or buying parts without evidence. The tests above preserve your data while giving the repair diagnostic useful information about where the signal stops.
