Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Heading Out is a single-player driving adventure built around choices, atmosphere, and an outlaw’s journey across a stylized America. Its mix of route planning, races, resource management, and story encounters gives it a distinctive identity, though reviews also flag concerns with driving polish and racing repetition.
What is Heading Out?
Developed by Serious Sim and Crunching Koalas and published by Crunching Koalas, Heading Out arrived on Steam for PC on May 7, 2024. It is not structured as a conventional racing game: the drive is part of a larger narrative journey in which choices and route decisions shape what happens next. The Steam listing describes a single-player experience with multiple endings.
How the driving and story work together
The central loop moves between a map and the road. You select routes, drive and race, then encounter story scenes, radio shows, and decisions. Fuel, car condition, and focus are resources to manage; choices can affect reputation, wanted level, encounters, challenges, and the developing story.
A May 2024 PC review from WayTooManyGames describes the structure as a blend of driving, roguelike, and visual-novel elements. The reviewer found routes appeared scripted while events varied. That is the reviewer’s impression of play, not a guarantee that the game procedurally generates routes or events.

What reviews praise—and where they see weaknesses
WayTooManyGames praises the PC version’s striking visual style and soundtrack, while criticizing the driving polish and reporting visual pop-in. A later review of the Xbox Series X version by Movies Games and Tech also highlights the visuals, soundtrack, and stories, but finds the racing somewhat repetitive. These are reviewers’ assessments, not results from independent playtesting for this article.
That mix makes the game’s appeal fairly specific: it is likely a better fit for players who want an atmospheric, choice-led road story than for those looking primarily for precise handling or a consistently demanding racer. When weighing it against another driving game, consider how much time you want to spend making map and story decisions versus racing, and how important technical driving feel is to you.
