Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Higurashi When They Cry Hou – Ch.1 Onikakushi is a reading-led sound novel that makes its countryside setting feel welcoming before letting a recurring mystery disturb that calm. Its appeal is the contrast between ordinary village life and the deaths and disappearances surrounding Hinamizawa—not action-game mechanics or a mystery resolved in this first chapter.
What kind of game is Onikakushi?
Steam describes Higurashi as a “sound novel” in which “The music, backgrounds and characters work together to create a world that is the stage of a novel for the user to read.” The player follows the protagonist’s point of view. In practice, the format is built around reading, with music, backgrounds and character presentation shaping the scene rather than asking you to expect an action-focused game.
That distinction matters to the experience: the story has room to establish routines and relationships, so the setting’s unsettling details gain weight against a recognizably everyday backdrop. Steam lists the game as single-player. Steam’s listing gives 07th Expansion as developer, MangaGamer and Sunflower Ocean as publishers, and May 15, 2015 as the release date.
What is the first chapter about?
The story opens in Hinamizawa, a small village in the early summer of the 58th year of Shouwa. Steam’s setup describes a community of fewer than two thousand people, an annual pattern of deaths and disappearances, and tension connected to a dam construction project. The chapter’s central pull is the uncertainty around those events: conspiracy, coincidence or curse? It establishes the questions and atmosphere without requiring a review to reveal their answers.

The contrast does the important work. Village life gives the story a familiar, intimate scale; the recurring incidents make that ordinary setting feel increasingly difficult to trust. Readers looking for a contained action game or a quick explanation of the mystery may find the reading-first pace less suited to them. Those willing to settle into a novel-like opening get a deliberate setup in which atmosphere and unanswered questions are the point.
Is Higurashi mostly reading, and what presentation options are available?
Yes: the official description frames it as a novel to read, with music, backgrounds and characters supporting the narrative. MangaGamer’s April 3, 2015 announcement for the Hou release said it would include options for new or old sprites, restore background music that had been replaced in the initial release, and let players switch between English and Japanese during play. Those are announced Hou-edition features; the announcement does not establish that every setting appears in every current build.

- Explore each stage and then find even more secrets by making your way through the stage backwards on the flip side
- Overcome varied enemies and obstacles, like Zombie Guys, Skelesaurus, Ukiki, and Monty Mole as you seek out hidden collectables; ESRB Content: Mild Cartoon Violence; Genre: Action, Platformer
- Pass a Joy Con controller to a friend for 2 player cooperative exploration
- Clad Yoshi in collectable, protective, handicraft costumes as he makes his way through each stage
These choices affect presentation, not the basic reading-led format. If alternate character art matters to you, check the options in the specific version you plan to play rather than assuming every platform or build exposes identical settings. MangaGamer’s Hou announcement provides the edition context.
Does it have English text?
Steam lists English, Japanese and Simplified Chinese interface and subtitle options. Its language table does not mark any full-audio language. The listing therefore supports English text, but not a claim that the story is fully voiced in English. Language availability can vary by storefront or build, so consult the listing for the version you intend to use.

Is there violence or other mature content?
Steam’s mature-content note says the game may not suit all audiences and identifies occasional coarse language, blood and violence. The listing does not provide a detailed scene-by-scene content breakdown, so readers who need specific trigger information should not treat that short note as exhaustive.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verdict: who should read Onikakushi?
Onikakushi is a strong fit for readers who want a sound novel that builds unease through a close-knit village, a protagonist-centered perspective and an unresolved pattern of disturbing events. Its opening depends on atmosphere and curiosity more than interactive action. The official Steam page showed 95% positive from 3,626 English reviews overall and 94% positive from 110 recent reviews in its 2026 snapshot; those are changing Steam user-review figures for the listing, not independent chapter-specific critical ratings.
