Heartopia removed a quest featuring Kapil after players criticized its depiction as racist. In a statement reported from the game’s official Discord, the developers said the scene was intended to show dizziness and loss of bodily control, apologized to people who felt offended, and called the incident a learning opportunity.
What happened in the Kapil quest?
The quest involved feeding Kapil a poisoned mushroom. Afterward, he jumped and made monkey sounds. Players objected to that combination, particularly in light of coverage describing Kapil as one of the game’s few non-white non-player characters. Critics characterized the depiction as racist; that criticism describes players’ response, not a formal finding about the developers’ intent.

What did Heartopia say?
The developers’ explanation, as reported, was that Kapil’s actions were meant to depict “the symptoms of dizziness and loss of bodily control.” They said they had removed the action, apologized to anyone offended, and would use the incident to improve.

Kotaku reproduced this wording from an announcement on the Heartopia Discord, attributed in its report to a DX staff member:
“We have since promptly removed this action. We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have felt offended. We appreciate the feedback that brought this matter to our attention. Moving forward, we will take this incident as a learning opportunity and strive to promote an inclusive and congenial environment within Heartopia. We extend our deepest apologies once again.”
