It adds country focus trees, scientific Special Projects and strategic raids; the 1.15 patch archive separately records dated follow-up fixes and tweaks. The expansion launched on November 14, 2024, so its launch details should not be mistaken for current game version or store pricing.
What Götterdämmerung adds
The expansion’s central additions are new national focus content for several countries, a system for pursuing Special Projects through scientific facilities and assigned scientists, and raids against strategic targets. Paradox also lists visible map structures, improved AI attack planning, changes to atomic warfare and more dangerous urban combat on its product page.
Focus trees and alternate histories
Germany receives a larger focus tree with monarchist, restored-democratic and alternate fascist militarist directions. The expansion also revises Austria’s tree and adds Habsburg-region content, alongside trees for Hungary and Belgium. The November 13, 2024 official patch notes provide a more granular list, including full trees for Austria, Belgium, Congo and Hungary, as well as German ahistorical paths. These are distinct descriptions of the advertised content, not a reason to treat every country or path as equivalent in scope.
Special Projects and raids
Special Projects let players direct scientific work toward wartime research through facilities and assigned scientists. The pre-release notes list 28 new Special Projects, and the feature section separately mentions 15 additional Special Projects and two projects for the No Step Back expansion. Those counts are presented in different parts of the official notes; they should not be added together into one assumed total.

The Steam announcement on launch day described the Expansion Pass as a package rather than a dynamic bundle and warned that someone who bought Götterdämmerung individually and later bought the pass could pay for the expansion twice. The pass contents named in that announcement included the expansion, the Graveyard of Empires country pack and the Prototype Vehicles unit pack. Treat those as historical terms and verify the current offer before purchase. The publisher identified Steam as an availability destination; the available information does not establish an Amazon physical product.
How to judge whether it fits your campaign
Götterdämmerung is most relevant if you want its particular national paths, experimental research choices or raid mechanics. To compare it with another Hearts of Iron IV expansion, look at which countries receive focus-tree content, whether it adds a distinct system, what alternate-history play it enables and what content you already own. The information here supports describing Götterdämmerung’s features, but not a current price comparison or a complete ranking against other DLC.

What Paradox said about its reception
In Paradox Interactive’s 2024 annual report, Hearts of Iron IV Game Director Peter Nicholson called Götterdämmerung “one of Hearts of Iron IV’s most successful releases ever” and described its design as “an extremely cohesive core fantasy for the expansion.” The report passage provides no quantitative sales figure, so the statement is qualitative rather than a measurable sales result.
