What Heartopia disclosed about AI
GamingBible reported on January 20, 2026, that Heartopia’s Steam page had been updated to disclose AI use in puzzles and chat. A community post reproducing a notice attributed to the Heartopia Official Team gives more detail, though the original Discord message and its edit history are not available in a first-party archive here.
- Puzzle gameplay: The reproduced notice says, “AI is used in the puzzle gameplay to reinterpret and redraw in-game snapshot images.”
- In-game chat: It says AI helps players understand different languages.
- Monetization: The notice says monetization content in Heartopia did not include AI-generated materials.
- Future disclosure: The reproduced notice says future use of AI-assisted content would be announced in advance.
The statement is attributed to the Heartopia Official Team; the available source does not name an individual spokesperson. Why some players objected
Reported criticism focused on the use of generative AI and the timing or visibility of the disclosure on Steam. GamingBible cited negative Steam reviews and Discord comments, including objections to learning about the use after the game was already available. That documents criticism, but it does not show how widespread those views were. GamingBible’s January 20 report describes the disclosure and some of the reaction.

Those broader claims are not independently corroborated by the other available reporting, so they should not be treated as verified measures of player sentiment. Read the January 22 article.
What the disclosure does—and does not—establish
The reported puzzle use concerns AI reinterpretation and redrawing of in-game snapshot images. It is not, by itself, evidence that all Heartopia art or assets were AI-generated. Likewise, the monetization statement is the team’s claim in the reproduced notice, not independent verification of every item or asset in the game. The notice’s promise of advance disclosure describes future practice; it does not resolve how clearly the original use was communicated.

Don’t confuse this with Heartopia’s other controversies
Heartopia’s January 23 announcement that it had reached 10 million players and offered a reward of 10 Wishing Stars prompted a separate complaint about the reward. That milestone story is not the AI disclosure most closely matched by this headline. GosuGamers’ report covers the milestone and reward criticism.
A March 2026 quest controversy, followed by the quest’s removal and an apology, was a later and separate issue. Kotaku reported on that incident.
