Helix Fossil or Dome Fossil in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen: Which Should You Choose?

Helix becomes Omastar, a natural special-attacking fit; Dome becomes Kabutops, a faster physical option. Choose by role, not by an objective ranking.

Choose Helix Fossil if you want the more straightforward special attacker: it becomes Omanyte and then Omastar, whose Special Attack fits its Water- and Ice-type moves. Choose Dome Fossil if you prefer Kabuto and Kabutops, with higher Attack and Speed for a physical role. Neither is an objectively better pick; the right choice depends on how you want to use it.

What each fossil becomes

Fossil Revived Pokémon Evolution Type of evolved Pokémon
Helix Fossil Omanyte Omastar Rock/Water
Dome Fossil Kabuto Kabutops Rock/Water

The choice happens on the lower floor of Mt. Moon after you defeat Super Nerd Miguel. You can take one fossil from that encounter; the Mt. Moon walkthrough documents both outcomes and the route onward through the cave. Bulbapedia’s FireRed and LeafGreen walkthrough covers the scene.

How their stats and moves compare

The figures below are base stats reported by PokeFireRed’s 2026 comparison, not battle stats for a particular Pokémon. Both evolved forms have the same reported base stat total, so the meaningful difference is how their stats fit their moves and roles. PokeFireRed’s Helix-versus-Dome comparison explains its figures and strategy analysis.

Evolved Pokémon Reported relevant base stats Practical fit
Omastar (Helix) 115 Special Attack, 125 Defense, 55 Speed; base stat total 495 Its stronger Special Attack aligns well with special Water and Ice moves.
Kabutops (Dome) 115 Attack, 80 Speed, 65 Special Attack; base stat total 495 Its higher Attack and Speed suit a physical role, but Surf uses Special Attack rather than its high Attack.

FireRed and LeafGreen use Generation III’s move-category system: a move’s type determines whether it is physical or special. That matters here because a Water move such as Surf uses Special Attack, so Kabutops cannot apply its high Attack stat to Surf. Omastar’s stronger Special Attack is a more natural match for its Water and Ice special options. PokeFireRed describes Omastar as the more straightforward fit and Kabutops as a strong option that benefits from planning.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Helix for a simpler special-attacking role

Helix is a reasonable pick if you want to use Water and Ice special moves without having to work around a mismatch between move category and Attack. Omastar also has the higher reported Defense of the two. Its lower Speed is the trade-off.

Choose Dome for a faster physical attacker

Dome suits you if you value Kabutops’s higher Attack and Speed and want to build around physical moves. Keep its lower Special Attack in mind when choosing Water moves: Surf uses that stat, not Kabutops’s Attack.

This is a team-fit decision, not a universal ranking. The comparison does not establish that one fossil produces better story outcomes or battle results for every team.

When you can revive the fossil

You do not receive an immediately usable teammate when you make the Mt. Moon choice. The chosen fossil is revived later at the Pokémon Lab on Cinnabar Island as a level 5 Pokémon. That timing means it joins your party well after the early and middle parts of the story. The revival details are described in this GameFAQs FireRed guide.

Can you get both fossils?

The Mt. Moon choice gives you only one fossil on a normal save. The ordinary route described in the GameFAQs guide for obtaining the other species is to revive it on another save or have another player choose and revive the other fossil, then trade the Pokémon to your game.
