There is not enough published evidence to say HelixSR runs faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck. HelixSR is an unofficial replacement for a game’s FSR 3.1 upscaler interface that runs NVIDIA DLSS Model E reconstruction on AMD GPUs through a custom compute path. The early speed claim does not include comparable frame-rate results or detailed test settings, and HelixSR’s published timing is from BC-250 hardware—not a Steam Deck FSR 4 comparison.
What HelixSR does—and what “DLSS 3.7” means here
HelixSR is an unofficial project that redirects a game’s FSR 3.1-facing upscaler interface to DLSS Model E reconstruction on AMD hardware. It uses the game’s color, depth, motion-vector, jitter, and exposure inputs, then processes them through a custom Direct3D 12 compute path. It is not native NVIDIA DLSS support, nor does it add DLSS integration to any game at will. The HelixSR project repository describes the implementation and its requirements.

The title “DLSS 3.7” refers to the reconstruction model being used in the claim; it should not be read as an official NVIDIA DLSS implementation for AMD handhelds. The project describes its approach as using Model E behind an FSR 3.1-compatible interface.

Game requirements
The game must use DirectX 12 and already include FSR 3.1. HelixSR replaces the game’s AMD FidelityFX upscaler DLL; it does not provide a general-purpose mod for games that lack the relevant integration. For Linux, the project says it runs through Proton and vkd3d-proton. Valve’s FAQ says games with FSR integration work on Steam Deck, but that general compatibility statement does not validate HelixSR specifically. Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ.

Hardware and testing scope
The project identifies version 1.4.1 and targets AMD RDNA 1 and newer GPUs. Radeon Vega and Radeon VII are not supported yet. Its stated development and testing setup is an AMD BC-250 running Linux with Mesa RADV in an FSR 3.1 game. The project says other GPUs, drivers, and games are untested. Community testing on the ROG Ally X helped with RDNA 3 wave64 shaders, but this is not broad validation across AMD handhelds. The project repository.
Is HelixSR faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck?
That has not been demonstrated in the available comparative results. The early report about the Steam Deck claim provides no FPS increase, matched benchmark, or detailed test configuration. The report summarizing the initial claim therefore does not establish that HelixSR is faster than FSR 4 on Steam Deck.

HelixSR’s 1.4.1 release notes report that a rewrite of the final downscale pass reduced QSSM Light processing time at 1080p Quality from 2.19 ms to 1.80 ms on BC-250. These are project-reported processing timings for HelixSR, not an FSR 4 comparison or a Steam Deck result. HelixSR’s repository and 1.4.1 timing notes.
Community impressions are mixed and anecdotal: one Reddit user said results on RDNA 2 appeared worse than FSR 4 at similar performance. That report cannot settle how the two compare across devices, games, or settings. The community discussion.

What FSR 4 results on Steam Deck do—and don’t—tell us
A separate Steam Deck HQ hands-on report found that an FSR 4 mod improved image detail in several tested games but could increase power demand and reduce performance. In Spider-Man Remastered, that report recorded around 90 FPS with FSR 3 Ultra Performance and around 70 FPS with FSR 4 Ultra Performance. Those are observations from that report’s setup, not a HelixSR test, so they provide context about FSR 4’s trade-offs rather than evidence for the HelixSR speed claim. A useful comparison needs to hold the conditions steady. Test the same game and scene on the same handheld, with the same power limit, render resolution, quality preset, driver and runtime. Record more than average FPS: frame time, image stability, power draw, battery impact, and whether the game remains compatible all matter. Without those controls, a faster result in one run may reflect different settings or hardware limits rather than the upscaler itself.

There is no controlled three-way comparison in the cited material covering HelixSR, FSR 4, and a game’s built-in FSR 3.1. The project’s published BC-250 timing cannot substitute for one because it measures HelixSR processing rather than matched end-to-end gameplay against the alternatives.
