Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a more responsive-feeling camera, try turning Camera Follow off and setting Movement Lag and Rotation Lag to 0.5 each—the starting values recommended by Game8, not a tested optimum. If motion blur or camera shake makes combat harder to read or exploration uncomfortable, reduce or disable those effects. Then choose a combat difficulty that lets you engage with the world at your preferred pace. These adjustments can improve control and visibility, but they do not add a map, compass, or quest markers: Hell Is Us is designed around observing the environment and following clues.
A practical starting setup
Change one option at a time, then try it in a familiar encounter or stretch of exploration. That makes it easier to tell whether an adjustment helped, rather than leaving you to guess which of several changes affected the feel. The values below are a baseline drawn from published guidance and a review, not a universal best configuration.

|---|---|---|
| Camera Follow | Off | Game8 recommends this for players who want more direct camera control. |
| Movement Lag | 0.5 | Game8 recommends this value as part of its camera setup. |
| Rotation Lag | 0.5 | Game8 recommends this value alongside Movement Lag. |
| Motion Blur | Reduce or disable if it obscures movement or causes discomfort. | TechRadar reports that the game allows players to adjust or disable it. |
| Camera Shake | Reduce or disable if camera movement makes action difficult to follow. | TechRadar reports that the game allows players to adjust or disable it. |
| Enemy Tier Indicator and Enemy Damage Numbers | Show them if you want more combat information. | Game8 recommends displaying both; they are optional aids, not requirements. |
| Difficulty | Lenient if combat is obstructing exploration; Balanced or Merciless for more pressure. | TechRadar reports these presets, along with individual adjustments to enemy health, damage, and aggression. |
Use the table as a set of experiments, not a bundle of settings you must copy. For example, if the camera already feels comfortable, leave its values alone and adjust only the visual effect that is causing trouble.
Why settings cannot make exploration conventional
Hell Is Us is a third-person action-adventure with a semi-open world and intense melee combat. Its official Steam description says it has no map, compass, or quest-marker system. Instead, the game expects you to observe what is around you, interpret clues, and make judgments about where to go. Swords, spears, and axes are among the weapons, and the player also uses a drone.
#1 Best Overall
- A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
- A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
- COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
- 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director
That design changes what “clearer exploration” can mean. Reducing distracting visual effects or choosing a HUD level you can read may make the scene easier to take in, but those changes do not provide conventional directions. If you are unsure where to go, treat the environment and clues as the intended navigation tools rather than expecting a setting to reveal a route. A cleaner view can help you attend to what is present; it cannot replace the act of interpreting it.
The setting advice below therefore separates legibility from navigation assistance. Camera response, blur, shake, and HUD information affect how comfortable or readable the experience feels. Difficulty affects how much combat pressure you face. None of those categories should be confused with adding map markers or a compass.
Make camera response feel less floaty
Camera Follow
Game8 recommends turning Camera Follow off. This is a reasonable first test if the camera’s automatic behavior feels like it is competing with your inputs. Try it in a familiar area or encounter and notice whether you prefer the added manual control. If managing the camera yourself makes tracking the action harder, turn Camera Follow back on; the recommendation is not a rule for every player.

Movement Lag and Rotation Lag
Game8’s suggested starting value is 0.5 for both Movement Lag and Rotation Lag. The guide presents these values as a way to make camera response feel smoother and snappier, but does not establish them through a controlled test across platforms or player preferences. Treat 0.5 as a point to begin experimenting with, not a guaranteed optimal setting.

- After crash-landing on a shape-shifting world, selene must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her Escape.
- Isolated and alone, she finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she's defeated - forced to restart her journey every time she dies.
Adjust one lag value at a time if the response still feels wrong. That helps you distinguish what affects your sense of movement from what affects turning. If a change makes camera control less natural, restore the previous value and test the other setting separately. There is no evidence here for a single value that will suit every display, platform, or player.
Reduce visual motion that gets in the way
Motion Blur
TechRadar’s review reports that motion blur can be reduced or disabled. Lower it if fast movement leaves the scene hard for you to read, or if the effect causes discomfort. If you do not notice a problem, there is no need to change it simply because an option exists. The useful setting is the one that preserves the visual information you need without making play less comfortable.
Camera Shake
Camera shake is also adjustable, according to TechRadar. Reduce or disable it if camera movement makes it difficult to follow enemy actions or keep your bearings. If you like the added physicality and it does not interfere with your view, retaining some shake is a valid preference. Motion blur and shake address different effects, so test them independently rather than assuming they need the same treatment.

Choose combat pressure without changing the exploration premise
TechRadar reports three difficulty presets: Lenient, Balanced, and Merciless. It also reports that players can adjust enemy health, damage, and aggression. These options let you change the intensity of encounters; they do not alter the game’s map-free approach to navigation.

If combat is stopping you from exploring
Start with Lenient if you want less combat pressure while you learn the world or follow its clues. Alternatively, adjust enemy health, damage, or aggression individually if you want to preserve some challenge while easing a particular part of an encounter. The review confirms those categories are adjustable, but does not provide a universally appropriate value for each one.
If you want more demanding encounters
Balanced is a middle preset reported by TechRadar; Merciless is the option to consider if you want more pressure. If you are already comfortable with the fights, there is no need to lower difficulty for the sake of exploration clarity: difficulty is a combat choice, not a visibility setting. You can revisit it if the amount of pressure stops being enjoyable.
Keep the HUD useful, not automatic
HUD visibility is a personal trade-off. Game8 treats it as a matter of preference and recommends showing Enemy Tier Indicators and Enemy Damage Numbers. Keeping those details visible may help you interpret encounters; reducing other on-screen information may suit you if you prefer a less cluttered exploration view. The available guidance does not establish one ideal HUD layout for everyone.
Start by retaining the pieces of combat information you actually use. If the view feels busy while exploring, try reducing HUD visibility and see whether you can still follow encounters comfortably. If you miss information when a fight starts, restore the relevant elements. This approach avoids treating “clearer” as synonymous with either maximum information or a completely empty screen.

Decide whether to automate target switching
TechRadar reports an option to automate enemy lock-ons, while Game8 describes target switching as a preference. Consider automated lock-on if selecting targets manually disrupts your attention or control. Keep the behavior manual if you would rather choose each target yourself or if automation does not match how you want to fight. It is a control-comfort decision, not a universal combat improvement.
Use color correction only for a specific visibility need
TechRadar’s review also reports color correction among the available options. The review does not establish a single correction setting that improves clarity for all players. If colors or visual distinctions are difficult for you to interpret, try the available correction choices and judge them in the scenes where you have trouble. Otherwise, there is no evidence-based reason to change this option just to follow a general “best settings” list.
What performance advice the available sources support
The official PlayStation page confirms a PS5 version and mentions DualSense vibration support, 3D audio compatibility, and PS5 Pro enhancement features. Steam identifies the PC version and publishes minimum system requirements. Those pages establish platforms and supported features; they do not demonstrate that a particular graphics preset, camera value, or effect setting improves frame rate on every platform.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor that reason, avoid treating camera advice as a performance fix or assuming that a particular console performance mode is available. The cited material does not provide current, reproducible platform-by-platform comparisons or a tested best graphics preset. TechRadar’s review describes one reviewer’s experience, including changes to difficulty and graphics settings, rather than a controlled benchmark across hardware. If your concern is performance rather than visual comfort or control, these sources are not enough to identify a universal graphics configuration.
A simple order for testing changes
- Choose your goal. Decide whether the main problem is camera response, visual motion, combat pressure, or too much on-screen information. Avoid changing unrelated categories at once.
- Try the camera baseline only if needed. Test Camera Follow off and Movement Lag and Rotation Lag at 0.5, the values Game8 recommends. Keep the setup only if it suits your control.
- Adjust blur and shake separately. Reduce or disable either effect if it harms clarity or comfort; leave it alone if it does not bother you.
- Set encounter information and difficulty to taste. Try enemy tier indicators and damage numbers if you want them, then choose Lenient, Balanced, Merciless, or the individual enemy adjustments that match your desired combat pressure.
- Recheck in play. Use a familiar encounter or exploration stretch to judge each change. Keep what helps and undo what makes the game harder to read or control.
Exact menu paths are not established by the cited sources, so this guide identifies settings by their reported names rather than guessing where they appear in a particular platform’s menus. The Steam description credits Creative Director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête with this statement about the game’s theme: “The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.” It is thematic context, not a settings instruction; the practical goal here is to tune comfort and combat pressure without mistaking those adjustments for a change to the game’s player-led exploration.
