The key is to set up the right console feature and understand which account and device hold each license.

In both ecosystems, access depends on the account’s settings and the applicable content license. Treat sharing as permission to use content on particular accounts or devices, not as a way to gift or permanently move ownership.

How PlayStation sharing works
PlayStation uses separate console settings for PS5 and PS4. They are not two names for the same feature: the PS5 setting is called Console Sharing and Offline Play, while the PS4 setting is Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. Configure the console using the account that owns the games or subscription benefits to be shared.
Set up sharing on PS5
- Sign in on the PS5 with the account that owns the digital games or media.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable.
- If the account already has this feature enabled on another PS5, disable it on that console before enabling it on the new one.
Once enabled, other users on that PS5 can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media, including when the console is offline. PlayStation allows Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5 at a time. If the previous console is inaccessible, PlayStation’s support guidance also describes remote device deactivation as an option for changing the setup.

Set up sharing on PS4
On the PS4, sign in with the account whose games or eligible subscription benefits should be shared. Open the account’s activation settings and choose Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. This is the PS4-specific primary-console setting; do not look for the PS5 wording on a PS4.
For selected PlayStation Plus benefits, Sony’s support guidance allows sharing on one primary PS4 and one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. That does not authorize sharing on a friend’s additional console beyond those configured devices.
Which PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared?
PlayStation Plus sharing is selective. On the configured console, the other users can receive access to eligible benefits such as online multiplayer, downloaded games bought with a Plus discount, downloaded Monthly Plus games, and catalog games where the membership plan includes them. Availability remains subject to the relevant game, membership, and license conditions.

Other benefits remain tied to the subscribing account. The listed exclusions include online storage, the ability to purchase discounted products, redeeming Plus games on another account, automatic patch downloads, and early access to time-limited trials. In practical terms, another household member may be able to play an eligible downloaded Plus title on the configured console, but should not expect the subscription or its account-level services to become theirs.
How Xbox Home Xbox sharing works
On Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, the purchaser chooses one console as their Home Xbox. The other accounts using that console can access eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and content enabled through a subscription without requiring the purchaser to remain signed in. Xbox’s sharing policy is specific to consoles; Windows uses separate sharing rules.
Designate the Home Xbox
- On the Xbox console you want other household accounts to use, sign in with the purchasing account.
- Open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Choose the option to make that console the account’s Home Xbox, following the on-screen confirmation.
After the designation, other users can sign into their own accounts on that Home Xbox and use eligible content there. The purchaser does not need to leave their account signed in for those users to access the Home console’s eligible licenses.

Use a different console while someone uses Home Xbox
The purchaser can sign into another Xbox console and use their library there, but roaming access relies on the purchaser being signed in and connected. Microsoft states that roaming licenses for other users on that device become invalid when the purchaser signs out. This is different from the Home Xbox arrangement, which provides eligible access to the other accounts on the designated console.
A different user can play on the Home Xbox while the purchaser uses a roaming console, subject to Microsoft’s rule that the same game cannot be used on more than one console at a time under the same account’s license. Plan around the exact game and account in use rather than assuming every title supports simultaneous play in every arrangement.
What does not transfer or share?
Access is not ownership transfer
When a second account plays a game through a designated console, the purchase still belongs to the purchasing account under the platform’s account- and device-based license arrangement. Removing the setting, losing the required license, or changing account access can affect whether others can continue to play. Sharing is therefore best suited to a household arrangement where the purchaser retains control of the account.

Xbox consumables stay with the buyer
Xbox’s rules distinguish durable add-ons from consumable items. A durable add-on is eligible for sharing under the Home Xbox model, while consumables—such as in-game currency or limited-use items—remain with the account that bought them. Microsoft’s documentation states: “Ownership of consumable add-ons is entirely per account and isn’t shared.” Do not assume that an item appearing in a shared game will be available to every account.
Subscription status and content terms still matter
Sharing does not guarantee access if the underlying subscription or content license no longer permits it. A game available through a subscription is not the same as a permanent purchase, and individual game or add-on terms can limit use. Check the status of the account that provides access and the specific title’s availability if a shared item stops launching.
Changing consoles and avoiding common problems
PlayStation: the old PS5 may still be enabled
If Console Sharing and Offline Play cannot be enabled on a new PS5, check whether it remains enabled on another PS5 under the same account. Disable it on the previous console, then repeat the setup on the intended one. The setting is limited to one PS5 at a time. PS4 primary activation is a separate setting, so check the correct console type and account before troubleshooting.

Xbox: Home Xbox changes are limited
Microsoft permits an account to change its Home Xbox up to five times in a rolling one-year period. A household should choose the shared console deliberately rather than switching the designation whenever someone visits or uses another device. If a new designation is refused, review recent Home Xbox changes and ensure you are signed into the account that owns the content.
Check which account owns the game
If a title is missing from another user’s library, first confirm that the purchasing account owns or currently has access to it, that the correct console feature is enabled, and that the game is downloaded or available on that console. A different account’s purchase will not be exposed just because the console itself is shared.
Separate offline and roaming failures
On PS5, offline play for other console users is part of the enabled Console Sharing and Offline Play setup, provided the game or media has been purchased and downloaded. On Xbox, an offline license is associated with the Home Xbox; a roaming session on another console depends on the purchaser being signed in and online. If access fails away from the Home Xbox, check sign-in and connectivity before changing the Home designation.
Which setup should a household choose?
- Two or more users share one PS5: Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the account that owns the content. Each person can then use their own profile on that console for eligible downloaded purchases and media.
- Two or more users share one PS4: Activate that console as the purchasing account’s primary PS4 to share eligible access.
- A household uses both PS4 and PS5: For selected Plus benefits, the support arrangement allows one primary PS4 and one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. Confirm eligibility for the particular benefit.
- Two Xbox users play on separate consoles: Set the shared household console as the purchaser’s Home Xbox. The purchaser can use the other console while signed in and connected; the other user uses their own account on Home Xbox.
- A friend wants access on an unrelated console: Do not treat household console sharing as a general remote gifting feature. The configured-device limits and account-license conditions still apply.
Before you enable sharing
- Use the account that actually owns the game or subscription access; console settings do not combine purchases from different accounts.
- Decide which console should receive the household access before activating a new device, especially on Xbox where Home Xbox changes are capped.
- Have each person use their own account where possible. The console grants eligible access; it does not turn another person into the purchasing account.
- Check whether the game is a purchased title, a subscription catalog title, a durable add-on, or a consumable. Those categories can have different access rules.
- For play away from the designated console, check connection and sign-in requirements rather than assuming the home-console offline behavior applies everywhere.
The simplest mental model is that each platform assigns certain licenses to a chosen console so other accounts there can use eligible content. The exact feature name, offline behavior, subscription coverage, and limits depend on whether the console is a PS5, PS4, Xbox One, or Xbox Series system.
