Sony announced on May 2, 2024, that Helldivers 2 players on Steam would have to link their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts—but canceled the planned requirement on May 6, before its announced enforcement dates. Some players threatened to quit or seek refunds; those comments show the backlash, not how many people actually left.
What Sony announced—and what changed
Sony Interactive Entertainment said Steam account linking had been temporarily optional because of technical issues at launch. Its May 2 announcement set out a plan to require the link for new players from May 6, begin mandatory login prompts for existing players on May 30, and set June 4 as the deadline for existing players.

On May 6, Sony updated its announcement: “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” The planned enforcement did not proceed on those dates. The announcement and reversal are documented in Sony’s Steam announcement.
Why Sony said it wanted account linking
Sony’s stated reason was player protection and moderation. It said linking would support bans for griefing and abuse, as well as an appeal path for banned players. In its May 2 announcement, Sony said: “Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games.” That is Sony’s explanation of the policy, not independent evidence that linking would improve moderation outcomes. Why some players objected
Some Steam users objected to creating or linking another account, raised privacy concerns, or said they would stop playing or seek refunds if the rule took effect. Comments in the announcement discussion included “future desertion of helldiver 2 in less than a month” and “welp, looks like im returning to civilian life. good run tho.” These are individual reactions, not a representative survey; they do not establish how many players quit, requested refunds, or shared those views. The announcement concerned Helldivers 2 players on Steam and a link between Steam and PlayStation Network accounts. It was not a statement that cross-play itself required linking, and those terms should not be treated as interchangeable. The dates were part of Sony’s 2024 proposal, not current enforcement deadlines.

The cited announcement and discussion establish the policy reversal in May 2024; they do not confirm the account-linking flow or regional availability on Steam today. For present-day requirements, check the game’s current Steam listing and official notices rather than assuming the abandoned schedule still applies.
