Helldivers 2’s 2024 Steam sales restrictions followed a dispute over Sony’s proposed PlayStation Network account-linking requirement. Sony withdrew the plan on May 6, but Steam sales restrictions in 177 countries and territories did not immediately disappear. Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said the studio was discussing possible solutions with PlayStation, particularly for places without PSN access. Later reporting in June 2025 said restrictions had been removed in most affected regions; check the live Steam store for your country to confirm current availability.
What happened in May 2024?
Helldivers 2 launched for PlayStation 5 and PC on February 8, 2024, with the PC version sold through Steam. At launch, Sony said Steam players could temporarily play without linking a PSN account because of technical issues. On May 3, Sony announced that linking would become mandatory: new Steam players were to link from May 6, and existing players by June 4, with login prompts beginning May 30. Sony described account linking as a way to support reporting, moderation, action against abusive players, and appeals.

On May 6, Sony reversed course. Its Steam announcement said: “The May 6 update, which would have required Steam and PlayStation Network account linking for new players and for current players beginning May 30, will not be moving forward.” Sony added: “We’re still learning what is best for PC players and your feedback has been invaluable.”
Why were 177 countries and territories affected?
The proposed linking requirement collided with the fact that PSN was unavailable in many places where Steam had previously sold the game. Contemporary PC Gamer reporting counted 177 countries and territories affected by Steam sales restrictions during the dispute. That number describes the 2024 situation; it is not a claim that those locations remain blocked today.

The timing matters: Sony’s May 6 reversal ended the proposed mandatory-linking update, but it did not immediately restore Steam sales in every affected region. The 177 figure comes from contemporary reporting, not an official Sony count in the announcement.
What did Arrowhead say about a solution?
PC Gamer reported that Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt said the studio was “talking solutions with PlayStation, especially for non-PSN countries.” He also indicated that he did not have final say. This was a report of ongoing discussions, not a Sony commitment or confirmation that a particular remedy had been agreed.

Does the PC version still require a PSN account?
Sony withdrew the May 2024 plan to require Steam and PSN account linking. The withdrawal announcement said the update would not move forward. It did not say that all regional Steam sales restrictions would end at the same time; those were a separate practical issue for players trying to buy the game.
For platform context, Arrowhead’s FAQ lists Steam and PlayStation 5 as platforms and says the game supports cross-play across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. Cross-play is not cross-progression: linking Steam and PSN accounts does not transfer game data between PC and PS5 copies.

Can you buy Helldivers 2 on Steam in your country now?
Later coverage in June 2025 reported that Sony had removed restrictions on Helldivers 2 and three other Steam games in most previously affected regions. That report indicates broad restoration, but it is not a country-by-country availability list and does not establish the live status for every market in October 2026.
Check the Helldivers 2 Steam store page while signed in or viewing Steam from your country. If the store offers a purchase option, the game is available to buy there; if it says the product is unavailable in your region, the historical reversal and later broad restoration do not override that current storefront restriction. The PS5 version is a separate platform option, not a way to purchase the Steam edition in a restricted region.
