If Helldivers 2 crashes on startup or during play, work through these eight checks in order, stopping when the problem is resolved. The right fix depends on the symptom and PC; none is guaranteed. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
1. Restart your PC and Steam
Fully exit Steam, restart Windows, then reopen Steam and launch the game. This quick check follows Steam’s general launch troubleshooting guidance: Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
2. Check that your PC meets the game’s requirements
Compare your system with the requirements shown on the Steam listing for HELLDIVERS 2. Steam lists these processor, memory and graphics baselines:

Both tiers specify Windows 10 and a 64-bit processor and operating system. The listing displays conflicting storage figures—135 GB under minimum and 40 GB under recommended—so it does not establish a dependable disk-space figure here. Requirements are a compatibility reference, not proof that a crash means you need to buy or upgrade hardware.

3. Install available Windows updates
Check Windows Update and install pending updates, then restart if Windows asks. Steam includes keeping Windows current among its general steps for launch failures; this is a low-risk check rather than a Helldivers 2-specific diagnosis. See Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
4. Update graphics and other relevant drivers
Install current drivers for your graphics card and other relevant PC components using the appropriate manufacturer or Windows update route. Steam recommends driver updates for launch failures, and Arrowhead lists driver updates among the next steps when repeated file validation problems persist. Neither source identifies a particular driver version as a universal fix, so use the current driver offered for your hardware rather than chasing an unverified version. 5. Temporarily close non-essential background apps
Close non-essential programs and overlays, then test the game. Steam recommends disabling non-essential software as a diagnostic step for launch problems. Treat this as a temporary check: if it makes no difference, reopen what you closed. See Steam Support’s launch troubleshooting guide.
6. Verify Helldivers 2 files in Steam
- Open Steam and go to Library.
- Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Let Steam finish, then try launching the game again.
Steam says verification can help with crashes or missing content. A small number of files failing validation does not necessarily mean the installation is damaged: Steam notes that some failures can involve configuration or authentication files, and Arrowhead says a few such failures are normal. Arrowhead identifies a different threshold for further action: if 10 or more files constantly need validation, it recommends considering driver updates, reinstalling, or clearing Helldivers 2 AppData contents. 7. Reinstall or reset game data only if the problem persists
If the crash continues—and especially if 10 or more files repeatedly need validation—Arrowhead advises considering a reinstall or deleting the contents of the game’s AppData folder. These are more disruptive than the earlier checks, so do not start here. Removing those contents resets in-game settings; preserve any settings you want to retain before proceeding. Follow Arrowhead’s validation and persistent-file guidance rather than deleting unrelated folders.
8. Fix the black screen with opening audio
Use this only if Helldivers 2 launches to a black screen while the opening cinematic audio plays. Arrowhead’s specific workaround is to switch the adapter index in the game’s settings file:

- Press Windows key + R, enter
%appdata%ArrowheadHelldivers2, and openuser_settings.config. - Find
adapter_index. Change1to0, or0to1, depending on the current value. - Save the file and try starting the game again.
