The dispute followed a proposed developer challenge and reports that its organizer was threatened and doxxed; Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony condemned threats and harassment on March 5. Community posts show players arguing over the response, but they do not establish who carried out the alleged doxxing or how many reviews were caused by it.
What sparked the Helldivers 2 controversy?
The dispute began with a player’s proposed challenge for Arrowhead developers: complete a Helldivers 2 operation on difficulty 10, with a proposed $1,000 donation to charity. GamesRadar+ reported on March 5, 2026, that the challenge’s issuer was subsequently subjected to threats and doxxing. The report does not establish who was responsible for those acts. GamesRadar+ reported on the incident and joint statement.

Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment issued a joint response that day. They said they were tracking the situation and condemned threats, harassment, and doxxing. Their statement also noted that the main Helldivers subreddit is owned and operated by its community. That distinction is relevant: discussion about how the subreddit was moderated does not by itself show that Arrowhead controlled its moderation or was responsible for the alleged doxxing.
Did the incident cause hundreds of negative Steam reviews?
That number is not verified. Community discussions on Reddit and Steam include claims that players were reviewing the game in response to the controversy, but the available posts do not provide a reliable, independently verified count tied specifically to the March incident. They are evidence of player opinion and discussion, not a sound basis for stating that hundreds of negative reviews were caused by the doxxing controversy. Reddit discussion and Steam community discussion reflect competing views.

Some players blamed Arrowhead or moderators for the handling of the situation; others disputed Arrowhead’s responsibility and pointed to the community-run nature of the subreddit. Those disagreements should not be treated as proof of involvement by the studio, moderators, or any particular person.
How the March controversy differs from the May review slump
A separate downturn was reported in May 2026 after a game update and an AMA. Windows Central said 38% of 10,169 recent reviews were positive in the period it examined. That is a dated snapshot of a later episode, not a count of reviews responding to the March doxxing controversy. Windows Central’s May report covers that separate slump.

What Arrowhead and Sony said
The joint statement, as reproduced by GamesRadar+, said: “We do not tolerate threats of violence, harassment, or doxxing toward anyone: players, creators, developers, moderators, or our teams in any community spaces.” It was issued by Arrowhead Game Studios and Sony Interactive Entertainment on March 5, 2026, and attributed jointly to the companies rather than to an individual spokesperson.
