He is described as a design concept, not identified as a real-world person. Game Director Mikael Eriksson explained the role in PlayStation Blog’s first-year retrospective, published February 6, 2025.
What does Joel do in Helldivers 2?
Joel helps direct the game’s evolving Galactic War by controlling factions and reacting to the community’s choices. That makes the narrative collaborative: Arrowhead sets events in motion and responds to what players do, while the players’ successes, failures and unexpected decisions give those events meaning.
Eriksson described the idea as a “Dungeon Master style concept” in which Joel “controls various factions and respond[s] to the often-surprising player actions.” He said the player-driven narrative is “as much about you guys playing with us as it is about us playing with you.” The wording explains a role in the game’s design; it does not establish that every mission outcome is individually scripted by Joel.
How did players’ choices become part of the story?
Malevelon Creek’s defeat
Players failed to defend Malevelon Creek from the Automatons. The loss became a shared community event, inspiring memes, rallying calls and demands for revenge. Eriksson said the developers had not expected the battle to become so significant. The episode shows how an outcome could become memorable through the players’ response, not simply because it was planned as a major story moment.

Unlocking the Patriot Exosuit
During the campaign on Tien Kwan, players liberated the planet and unlocked the EXO-45 Patriot Exosuit. The retrospective recalls that the studio was uncertain whether the community would succeed, another example of the game’s larger goals depending on collective player action.
A memorial for Malevelon Creek
After Malevelon Creek was liberated, the game marked April 3 as a memorial day and gave players a commemorative cape. A defeat had become part of the community’s shared history, and the later in-game recognition reflected that history.

The Anti-Tank Mines decision
In June 2024, players chose to rescue stranded civilians at Vernen Wells rather than retrieve materials from Marfark to unlock Anti-Tank Mines. PlayStation Blog says Arrowhead Game Studios donated $4,311 to Save the Children in response to that choice. The retrospective presents the donation as a consequence of the community’s decision, rather than as a gameplay reward.
What does the first anniversary retrospective cover?
Helldivers 2 launched on February 8, 2024. PlayStation Blog’s retrospective, written by Corey Brotherson and published February 6, 2025, follows the game’s first year chronologically through the December 2024 Omens of Tyranny update. It identifies the game as a third-person squad-based shooter and places Joel’s role in the context of the Galactic War’s player-driven events.

Is Joel a specific person?
The retrospective names Joel as the game-master concept but does not identify an individual behind the name. Its explanation is about how the game’s world is managed: factions act, the community responds, and the developers adapt the ongoing war to player behavior. The anniversary article therefore explains Joel’s function; it does not reveal a real-world identity.
