Helldivers 2 Error Code 1 or -1 usually indicates a failed login, server request, or online session connection. It does not have one officially documented cause or one guaranteed fix. First check whether Helldivers 2, Steam, PlayStation Network, or your internet connection is experiencing an outage. Then follow the platform-specific steps below, starting with the safest and most reversible fixes.

Arrowhead’s current known-issues page, updated August 18, 2026, does not list a dedicated Error 1 or Error -1 explanation. It also warns that some ongoing connectivity problems may not appear on the list.

What does Helldivers 2 Error Code -1 mean?

Error -1 commonly appears with messages such as “Server request failed” while the game is trying to connect at the opening screen. Players may see it during or after:

• “Press Any Button”
• “Defrosting Helldiver”
• the opening cinematic
• a “Servers at capacity” or “Login limit reached” message

In practical terms, treat it as a generic connection or session failure. The code alone does not prove that the servers are down, that your installation is corrupted, or that your account is affected. The failure can be caused by a temporary server-side problem, a Steam or PS5 session issue, local network routing, security software, corrupted local data, or an authentication conflict.

Is Error Code 1 different from Error Code -1?

Error 1 and Error -1 may represent different backend responses, but Arrowhead has not published a reliable public explanation separating them or assigning each a different fix. Error -1 is frequently reported alongside “Server request failed,” while Error 1 is also associated with startup, login, and server-capacity failures.

For troubleshooting purposes, the wording and timing matter more than the number. If both codes appear before you reach your ship or the main menu, use the same sequence below unless the message specifically identifies a Steam, PSN, anti-cheat, or account problem.

Check for an outage before changing files

Do this before reinstalling the game or deleting local settings:

1. Check Arrowhead’s known issues and recent announcements or patch notes.
2. On PS5, check PlayStation Network service status.
3. On PC, check Steam’s service status and recent reports from other players.
4. Ask whether friends can currently log in, especially friends in the same region.

An absent error from Arrowhead’s list does not prove that the service is healthy: Arrowhead says that many ongoing connectivity problems are not necessarily listed. If many players began seeing the error after a patch, major event, or capacity spike, waiting for server-side recovery is usually more sensible than repeatedly reinstalling.

Quick fixes for both PC and PS5

1. Record the exact message. Note whether it says Error 1 or Error -1, where it appears, and whether audio or the opening cinematic continues.
2. Fully close Helldivers 2. Do not leave it suspended or merely return to the desktop.
3. Restart Steam or the PS5. On PC, exit Steam completely and reopen it. On PS5, shut the console down instead of leaving it in Rest Mode.
4. Restart your router and modem. Disconnect power, wait five to seven minutes, reconnect, and wait until the internet is stable. Arrowhead gives this timing in its PS5 technical guidance.
5. Install pending updates. Update Helldivers 2, Steam or PS5 system software, Windows, and relevant drivers.
6. Try again after a short interval. Repeated login attempts during a capacity or authentication incident are unlikely to repair a server-side problem.

How to fix Error 1 or -1 on PC and Steam

1. Restart Steam completely

Exit Helldivers 2, then exit Steam using Steam’s menu. If the game or client appears stuck, open Windows Task Manager and check for remaining Helldivers 2, Steam, or anti-cheat processes. End only processes you recognize, restart Steam, and launch the game again.

2. Verify the game files

1. Open Steam and select Library.
2. Right-click HELLDIVERS 2 and choose Properties.
3. Open Installed Files.
4. Select Verify integrity of game files.
5. When the check finishes, relaunch the game.

Verification can help if files are missing or corrupted, but it cannot fix an outage, account problem, or bad network route. Do not panic if Steam reports that a small number of files failed validation. Arrowhead says some authentication files are regenerated and sent to its backend during launch, so a few failures can be normal.

Pay more attention if 10 or more files repeatedly need to be validated. Arrowhead’s Steam validation guidance recommends updating drivers, reinstalling if necessary, or resetting the local Helldivers 2 configuration.

3. Update Windows and drivers

Install pending Windows updates and update your graphics and network adapter drivers from the manufacturer or your PC maker. This is particularly worthwhile if the error began after a system update, driver change, or hardware modification.

4. Inspect antivirus, firewall, and anti-cheat blocks

Security software can block the game or its anti-cheat components from reaching the network. Check your antivirus quarantine and firewall block logs for Helldivers 2, Steam, or nProtect-related processes.

If you understand the security implications, add the legitimate game executable as an allowed application and test again. Do not permanently disable protection. Re-enable or restore your normal security settings after testing, and never download unofficial DLLs, “fixers,” or modified executables.

5. Temporarily remove VPN and proxy variables

Disable a VPN or proxy for one test, because it can change routing, interfere with authentication, or introduce firewall conflicts. A VPN helping in one case does not prove that it is a proper fix; it may simply have changed the route to the service.

Community reports also mention IPv6 changes and alternate Steam download regions, but those reports conflict and are not sufficient to establish a universal remedy. Treat them as optional diagnostics rather than standard fixes.

6. Reset the local AppData configuration

Only do this after backing up the folder. Arrowhead says that deleting the contents of the Helldivers 2 AppData folder can help when numerous files repeatedly fail validation, but it also resets in-game settings.

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter %appdata% and press Enter.
3. Locate the Arrowhead or Helldivers 2 folder.
4. Copy it somewhere safe as a backup.
5. Delete its contents only if earlier steps did not help and repeated validation failures justify it.
6. Launch the game and configure your settings again.

This documented reset affects local settings. Do not confuse it with deleting online progression, and do not delete random folders outside the relevant game configuration directory.

7. Test another network

Use a wired connection if possible. You can also test briefly with a phone hotspot, then switch back to your normal connection.

• Works on a hotspot but not home internet: investigate the router, ISP route, DNS, firewall, NAT, or IPv6 configuration.
• Fails on multiple networks: a service-side or account-side problem becomes more likely.
• Only this PC fails: focus on Steam, local files, drivers, security software, and local configuration.

Do not pay for a VPN simply to troubleshoot this error. VPNs can add latency, complicate matchmaking, trigger new security checks, and create privacy or subscription costs.

8. Remove unofficial modifications

If you use mods or have modified game files, restore a clean installation and verify the files before testing again. This is a sensible diagnostic step, not proof that mods are the confirmed cause of Error 1 or -1.

How to fix Error 1 or -1 on PS5

1. Restart the game, console, and router

Close Helldivers 2, turn the PS5 off completely rather than using Rest Mode, and restart the router. Leave the router disconnected for five to seven minutes before reconnecting it, then test the game.

2. Check for a Helldivers 2 update

1. Highlight Helldivers 2 on the PS5 home screen.
2. Press the Options button.
3. Select Check for Update.

These are the steps in Arrowhead’s PS5 troubleshooting guidance.

3. Update PS5 system software

Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings > Update System Software, then install any available update.

4. Clear the cache and rebuild the database

This is a local-console troubleshooting measure, not the first response to a suspected server outage:

1. Turn the PS5 off completely.
2. Hold the power button until the second beep, approximately seven seconds.
3. Connect the controller using a USB cable.
4. Select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database.
5. Choose Rebuild Database where appropriate.

Do not repeat this unnecessarily, and do not expect it to repair a live service, PSN, or account-side incident.

5. Reinstall Helldivers 2

If local corruption remains a reasonable possibility, use Settings > Storage > Games and Apps > Helldivers 2 > Delete, then reinstall the game from your library. Reinstalling will not resolve a server outage, PSN disruption, account issue, or network route problem.

If the game opens to a black screen

A black screen with the opening cinematic’s audio still playing can be a different problem from Error 1 or -1. Arrowhead’s specific PC procedure is:

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter %appdata%.
3. Open Arrowhead, then Helldivers2.
4. Open user_settings.config in a text editor.
5. Find adapter_index.
6. Change 1 to 0, or 0 to 1.
7. Save the file and relaunch.

Community-reported workarounds

The following methods appear in player reports, but they are not official, guaranteed fixes:

• With Helldivers 2 closed, join a friend’s game from the Steam friends list.
• Log out of Steam and sign in again.
• Run the legitimate game executable as administrator.
• Temporarily switch networks.
• Temporarily disable IPv6 as a diagnostic test, if you know how to restore it.
• Remove a VPN or proxy.
• Check whether security software blocked nProtect or the game.
• Reset local configuration files after making a backup.
• Wait and retry during a server-capacity event.

A Steam discussion describes the friend-join method working for one player while the game was closed, and other discussions contain reports involving VPNs, IPv6, security software, and administrator mode. These are individual anecdotes, not evidence that any one method works universally.

What not to do

• Do not repeatedly reinstall the game before checking service status.
• Do not permanently disable antivirus, firewall, or other security protection.
• Do not download third-party replacement files, DLLs, or “repair” tools.
• Do not edit the Windows Registry without a specific, documented reason.
• Do not delete local folders without backing them up and understanding what they reset.
• Do not assume a VPN is a permanent solution.
