Helldivers 2’s Escalation of Freedom update was patch 1.001.002, released August 6, 2024. Its biggest addition was difficulty 10, Super Helldive, alongside new objectives and enemy types, environmental hazards, balance changes, fixes, and known issues. These are the notes for that historical update—not a description of the game’s current build.
What Escalation of Freedom added
Super Helldive and larger outposts
Arrowhead added difficulty 10, called Super Helldive, and described it as an extreme challenge for experienced Helldivers. The difficulty introduced larger Terminid strongholds and Automaton fortresses, where squads could search for confidential data and extract it.

Faction-specific secondary objectives
- Automatons: Destroy a Bio-Processor, a human-processing plant.
- Terminids: Extract with a living larva sample.
New enemy threats
The update highlighted five enemy additions or variants: the returning Impaler, Rocket Tank, Reinforced Scout Strider, Spore Charger, and Alpha Commander.
Swamp planet and acid storms
A foggy swamp planet joined the available environments. Acid storms temporarily reduced armor for both players and enemies, changing how exposed combatants handled incoming damage.

Selected balance and gameplay changes
Arrowhead’s 1.001.002 notes included both increases and reductions; the patch was not a blanket buff or nerf. The figures below are the values listed in the August 6, 2024 patch notes, not independent performance measurements.

| Grief protection | Kicked players could continue in their own mission and receive full rewards if they completed it. |
Fixes and known issues at release
The official notes also listed crash fixes, social-menu improvements, gameplay adjustments, and miscellaneous fixes. They flagged publication-time issues including performance problems at difficulty 10, cross-platform friend requests, and mission or combat bugs. Those entries describe the state reported with patch 1.001.002; they do not establish whether each issue remains in the game now.

Arrowhead’s August 6, 2024 patch post contains the full 1.001.002 notes. The studio’s latest patch notes index lists later updates, confirming that Escalation of Freedom is not the current patch record.
