Helldivers 2 players did defeat the Automatons’ April 2024 attack—but only temporarily. PlayStation’s retrospective says players crushed the assault faster than Arrowhead expected, then records that the Automatons returned. That historical victory should not be mistaken for proof that the faction is absent from the Galactic War today.
What “cleansed the Automatons” refers to
The phrase describes a completed episode in April 2024, after players had won the battle for Malevelon Creek. The Automatons launched a full-scale attack, and Helldivers defeated it in what PlayStation later described as a “hilariously swift” victory. Players did “vastly better” than Arrowhead had planned, according to the studio’s retrospective.

That account does not give a verified player count, duration, or other numerical measure for the victory. Its central qualification is simple: “Of course, somehow, the Automatons returned.” The win cleared that attack, not the faction from the game permanently. PlayStation’s one-year retrospective recounts the episode.
How the later Automaton campaign changes the picture
The Automatons were part of a later campaign as well. In a February 10, 2026 update, Arrowhead said they had stolen the Star of Peace schematics and were acting under the Cyborg Legion. The order sent players to Cyberstan to fight through factory cities and disrupt Automaton and Cyborg activity. This was a separate campaign from the April 2024 attack, not evidence that the 2024 victory never happened. PlayStation’s February 2026 update announcement describes that Cyberstan operation.

Does this mean the Automatons are gone from the live Galactic War?
No such current-status conclusion follows from the historical victory. The available official account establishes that the Automatons returned after April 2024, and the February 2026 update documents a later Automaton-Cyborg campaign. Neither tells readers which planets the Automatons control on October 8, 2026, or what the live Major Order is on that date.
PlayStation’s August 12, 2026 announcement introduced the Devoid of Liberty update and said Helldivers 2 had entered the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium Game Catalog. Its focus was the Illuminate Void; it is not a live-map report and does not establish the state of the Automaton front. Check an official, timestamped Galactic War map or Major Order result for current control rather than treating an old victory or an update announcement as a live status report. The August 2026 announcement covers that update and catalog news.

Where to play Helldivers 2
PlayStation announced Helldivers 2 for PS5 and Steam, with four-player cooperative multiplayer. The August 2026 announcement also said the game joined the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog for Extra and Premium members on that date; that announcement alone does not confirm whether it remains included now. PlayStation’s launch announcement lists the platforms and co-op format.
