Check service status first. If services appear available, test your connection and firewall, then contact the support team responsible for the kind of problem you’re seeing.
What the error means
The message confirms a connection attempt failed, but it does not identify the cause. It is not proof that Arrowhead’s servers are down, nor that your internet connection is broken. The useful first step is to distinguish a service-side problem from a local connectivity problem.

Helldivers 2 requires an internet connection, according to Arrowhead Player Support. The game is available on Steam and PlayStation 5. PlayStation’s Canada support page says PS5 and PC players can play together, and that PS5 online play requires PlayStation Plus.
Check whether a service is having problems
Before changing firewall settings or buying networking equipment, check the current status of the relevant platform and look for Arrowhead’s current notices or known-issues guidance. Steam’s general network troubleshooting specifically recommends checking Steam Server Status and notes that system-wide downtime can prevent access: Steam network connectivity troubleshooting. For game-specific guidance, use Arrowhead Support.

A status page showing normal operation is useful evidence, but it cannot rule out every regional, game-specific, or short-lived connection issue. Arrowhead’s live known-issues category points to current articles; check those directly for the latest guidance rather than assuming this exact message has a published fix.
If services appear available, isolate your connection
Steam’s network guidance is general advice, not a confirmed Helldivers 2-specific fix. It recommends testing the router and, if possible, connecting directly by Ethernet. Steam notes that “Wireless and powerline connections can cause intermittent failures.” A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi or powerline networking is involved; it cannot fix a server-side outage.

- Test another connection. Restarting or testing your router can help identify an intermittent local network issue. If possible, try a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi or powerline.
- Check the firewall. Confirm that the game and the relevant platform client are allowed through your firewall. Follow your security vendor’s instructions; do not disable all security protections as a blanket troubleshooting step.
- Retry after each change. Change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it affects the connection.
If you do not already have an Ethernet cable, one can enable the wired-connection test. Buying one is optional; it is a diagnostic aid, not a remedy for an outage.

Arrowhead confirms that cross-play can be disabled, while PlayStation says PS5 and PC players can team up. The official sources reviewed do not identify cross-play as the cause of this exact error or confirm that turning it off will fix it.

If the problem happens only when joining a friend on another platform, temporarily toggling cross-play is a reasonable isolation experiment. Treat the result as a clue, not a guaranteed fix.
