What was the Heart of Democracy update?
Arrowhead Game Studios’ May 20, 2025 announcement described the invasion of Super Earth as a new major campaign for Helldivers 2. “The battle for Super Earth has begun,” wrote Katherine Baskin, Arrowhead’s Social Media and Community Manager, in the PlayStation.Blog announcement. The update shifted combat into city environments and tied operations to the effort to liberate Super Earth’s cities.

Heart of Democracy is a past update, not the game’s latest update. The Helldivers 2 Steam announcements index includes later updates and developer commentary.
What did the update add?
Urban operations on Super Earth
Players fight among skyscrapers and crowded streets in city biomes. Completing operations helps liberate cities and influences the wider planetary campaign, making the urban missions part of an ongoing battle rather than isolated encounters.

A shifting fight against Illuminate landing forces
The invasion objective is to gain ground against Illuminate forces trying to control their landing areas. Control can shift rapidly, so the campaign plays out as a tug-of-war: Helldivers must keep contesting the invasion rather than treating a single cleared area as a permanent victory.
Planetary Defense Cannons
Players can activate Planetary Defense Cannons beneath Super Earth’s streets and use them to attack the Illuminate fleet. Cannon activation is a distinct mission goal alongside fighting on the ground and reclaiming city territory.

SEAF squads as temporary support
Small SEAF squads can engage enemies independently or be ordered to follow Helldivers temporarily as they move toward objectives. They add battlefield support, but the announcement does not describe them as a permanent player-controlled squad.
Civilians in the combat zone
Civilians remain in the streets during the fighting. Arrowhead warns that civilian deaths caused by friendly fire are punished, adding a clear operational constraint to combat in crowded city areas.

What the announcement says about weapons and enemies
The announcement places the city invasion after a previous week’s release of a primary-weapon customization system and expanded surplus options; it does not present those systems as additions made by Heart of Democracy. It also notes that players had already learned to fight Illuminate enemies including Crescent Overseers and Fleshmobs. The update overview does not provide numeric balance changes, weapon statistics, or performance figures.
Release date, version, and platform context
The update went live on May 20, 2025, according to the official PlayStation.Blog post. The community-maintained Helldivers Wiki entry for version 1.003.002 associates that version number with the same date; treat the version label as a secondary-source reference rather than an official patch-note header.
The announcement states that the update requires Helldivers 2 and an internet connection. Separately, Xbox Wire confirmed the game’s availability on Xbox Series X|S in August 2025.
