What to prioritize when a fight starts
- Find and kill Watchers. A September 2026 community tactics guide says Watchers detect players and summon reinforcements. Focus them before the squad spends time and ammunition clearing nearby Voteless.
- Control the Voteless crowd. Use area damage against groups of unarmored enemies, while keeping enough space to move or retreat. The community guide suggests options such as the Grenade Launcher, incendiary weapons, Rover, and gas or airburst stratagems; exact effectiveness can change with patches.
- Maintain pressure on shielded Overseers. The guide says their shields regenerate after incoming damage stops and recommends splash, arc, fire, or gas effects to keep damage going. Treat this as patch-sensitive advice and check current behavior in-game.
- Coordinate anti-tank fire against Harvesters. The same guide recommends targeting shield-generator structures on the legs before the chassis. Consider that a starting point, not a guaranteed sequence across every difficulty or patch.
If a Watcher completes its scan, the guide advises breaking contact rather than staying to fight the reinforcement wave. Assign one player to the remaining priority target while others manage the crowd, and avoid having the whole squad expend ammunition on the nearest enemies.

How to handle the October 2026 additions
Arrowhead’s Devoid of Liberty 7.0.0 patch notes, dated October 5, 2026, add the Wretch and Crusher to the Illuminate roster.
Wretches: aim carefully as they close
Arrowhead describes Wretches as nimble enemies that dodge and leap while advancing. The notes do not specify a weak point, armor penetration requirement, or best weapon. Keep your aim on the advancing threat and be ready for its movement, but do not assume a particular weapon is an official counter.

Crushers: avoid pauses in damage
The patch notes say Crushers can regenerate while taking heavy damage and need to be worn down quickly and consistently. Coordinate sustained attacks so the squad does not leave long gaps in pressure. Arrowhead does not give an exact damage threshold, weapon, or tested attack sequence.
Use terrain to control the engagement
Buildings and cover can break a Harvester’s beam line, giving the squad a chance to reposition rather than trading shots in the open. The detailed community guide cautions against fighting in open streets; Arrowhead’s original Illuminate return and colony-mission notes describe tight urban spaces, alleys, and forked paths. Use those routes to limit sightlines, but keep an escape path clear so approaching Voteless do not trap the team.

Build a squad around complementary jobs
There is no single universally optimal Illuminate loadout established by the available sources. Instead, make sure the team covers several jobs: crowd control, sustained damage against shielded targets, and an answer for heavy enemies such as Harvesters. The September community guide lists the Grenade Launcher, Autocannon, Recoilless Rifle, and multiple stratagems as examples, not as a definitive build.
- Crowd coverage: Can the option hit several Voteless without consuming the squad’s ammunition too quickly?
- Sustained pressure: Can it keep damage on a shielded target while teammates move or reload?
- Heavy-target answer: Does the team retain anti-tank capability for Harvesters?
- Range and terrain: Can it reach elevated enemies or work around urban sightlines?
- Friendly-fire and mobility: Will it restrict movement or put teammates at risk in close streets?
These are practical comparison questions, not a published weapon-rating system. The older guide’s equipment advice predates the October additions, so reassess weapon performance after balance changes.

SEAF support can add another squad role
Arrowhead’s October update notes say friendly SEAF troops can appear as a planet modifier. In an August 12, 2026 Xbox Wire article, Arrowhead Community Manager Mitch Ayre described SEAF squad roles that include a medic and a heavy equipped with a machine gun and EAT. Their appearance depends on mission and update conditions, so treat them as possible support rather than a guaranteed part of every Illuminate fight.
