Steam lists HELLDIVERS 2 as Playable on Steam Deck, not Verified. Playable means the game may require manual configuration; it does not promise crash-free play on every Deck, SteamOS build, Proton version, or game update. Arrowhead’s known-issues page, updated October 7, 2026, says most crashes, performance problems, and connectivity issues are ongoing and are not listed there. Check for a current game-side issue first, then work through these reversible troubleshooting steps.
1. Check for a current game issue
Before changing settings, check Arrowhead’s HELLDIVERS 2 Known Issues page and recent official patch notes. As of October 7, 2026, Arrowhead says most crash, performance, and connectivity problems are ongoing but not listed on the page. Its current confirmed list does not identify a specific Steam Deck crash. If the problem began after a patch and other players report the same symptom, a local reinstall may not address a game-side regression.
2. Update SteamOS and restart
Valve’s general troubleshooting advice for unstable Steam applications starts with installing available system updates and restarting the Deck. Open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates, install any available update, then restart the device. This is a device-level baseline, not a Helldivers-specific fix.
3. Temporarily disable third-party add-ons
Valve recommends exiting or disabling third-party applications installed through Desktop Mode when Steam applications are unstable, then restarting the Deck. If you use add-ons or overlays, disable them for a test and re-enable them one at a time afterward. That can help isolate whether one affects the crash; no particular add-on is established as a cause.

4. Try the latest Proton version
Valve suggests trying the latest Proton for Steam app problems. Record the current compatibility selection first so you can restore it if needed.
- Open Library and select HELLDIVERS 2.
- Open the game’s Properties, then select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool and select the latest Proton version available.
- Launch the game and see whether the crash changes.
This is generic Steam troubleshooting advice, not an Arrowhead-certified fix for this crash. Valve notes that if the Linux version is installed, selecting Proton can cause Steam to download the Windows version.

5. Verify the installed game files
Arrowhead recommends checking the installation through Steam. In the game’s Properties > Installed Files, choose Verify integrity of game files (sometimes displayed as “Verify file integrity”). Steam checks the installed files and may replace damaged or missing ones. Verification is worth trying, but it does not guarantee a crash will be resolved.
6. Lower graphics settings
Valve recommends reducing system load by trying a lower graphics preset or lowering individual settings. This is most relevant if crashes follow long sessions, occur during demanding scenes, or happen alongside performance trouble. The available guidance does not establish graphics settings as the cause of every Deck crash, so treat this as a diagnostic test rather than a prescribed configuration.

7. Reinstall only if simpler checks fail, then contact support
Arrowhead’s general PC troubleshooting guidance suggests uninstalling and reinstalling if basic checks do not help, and contacting support if the problem remains. Reinstalling takes longer, so leave it until after the checks above. Do not follow Windows-specific AppData deletion instructions on a Steam Deck; they are not Deck instructions.
If the crash persists, Steam identifies Arrowhead as HELLDIVERS 2’s official support provider. When contacting support, include your Deck model, SteamOS and game versions, when the crash happens, whether it began after an update, and the steps you have tried. These details can help describe the issue; they are not stated support requirements.

Use the crash pattern to guide your next check
Note whether HELLDIVERS 2 crashes on launch or during a mission, and whether the problem began after a game update or recurs across versions. These distinctions can make a report more useful, but they do not by themselves establish a cause. If an official update or known-issues entry matches the timing and symptom, monitor it before repeating disruptive local changes.
