His point was simple: the games are different, and players can enjoy both.
What Johan Pilestedt said about the comparison
In a September 2024 exchange, Pilestedt responded to the online claim that “Helldivers 2 will die when Space Marine 2 launches.” GamesRadar quoted him saying: “I think we should be grateful for getting several awesome games. I can’t even imagine how I, as a kid, would have felt to be able to play Helldivers and [Space Marine 2].” He also described them as “different games, but you can enjoy as many games as you want!” GamesRadar’s report presents the remarks as a response to the perceived competition, not as a prediction about either game’s future.

How the games differ
Both games offer co-op shooting and battles against swarms, which helps explain why players compared them. But September 2024 coverage pointed to meaningful differences in how their co-op is organized and how missions work. This is a snapshot of the distinctions reported then, not a complete audit of either game’s current features.

Why cooperation is central to Helldivers 2
Pilestedt’s earlier comments about Helldivers 2 offer context for his response. In a March 2024 interview with PlayStation, he said, “A good co-op game forces players to play together, but a great one makes players want to play together.” He also said, “Feeling human is a key part to the Helldivers experience.”
He described cooperation, friendly fire and chaos as intentional parts of the game: players should feel that they cannot handle everything alone. The timing of the exchange
The remarks appeared in September 2024 amid criticism of Helldivers 2 updates and conversation about players returning around a major patch. That was the context of the coverage at the time; it does not establish present-day player counts or sentiment. VideoGamer also reported the “will die” claim and Pilestedt’s reply in its September 19, 2024 report.
